Description: The Mathematics major at the University of Georgia is demanding yet versatile. The skills emphasized by this major include problem solving and analysis, mathematical modeling, and abstract conceptual thinking. The importance of these skills is recognized in the variety of career opportunities available to the mathematics major. The mathematics major is sometimes used as a stepping stone to professional schools such as law, business, or medicine; it can lead to applied careers in actuarial sciences, computer modeling and applications, and optimization and control theory; it can lead to academic positions, from high school teacher to college professor. Mathematics classes are generally small, offering students a great amount of personal attention. State-of-the-art computer labs are available to mathematics students. And finally, an active Math Club offers students opportunities to interact with each other, graduate students, and faculty. Visit our Web Page at http://www.math.uga.edu/ for further information.

Career Opportunities: Some of our recent graduates have gone on to doctoral work at various top-ranked universities while others have chosen careers in industry. Some employers who have hired recent mathematics majors are: Arthur Anderson, C&S Bank, Delta Airlines, Hansen Inc., NASA, National Security Agency, Southern Bell, and the U.S. Navy.
Expectations
of Transfer Students:
Students are ordinarily expected to have completed the calculus sequence (through MATH 2500), Introduction to Linear Algebra (MATH 3000), Sequences and Series (MATH 3100), and Elementary Differential Equations (MATH 2700) before beginning their third-year course work. Earliest possible completion of Introduction to Higher Mathematics (MATH 3200) will facilitate the timely fulfillment of major requirements. Mathematics majors are encouraged to take Introductory Physics for Science and Engineering Students--Mechanics, Waves, Thermodynamics (PHYS 1211-1211L) and Introductory Physics for Science and Engineering Students--Electricity and Magnetism, Optics, Modern Physics (PHYS 1212-1212L), as well as Introduction to Computing and Programming (CSCI 1301-1301L).
Student Organizations: The University of Georgia's Math Club is an organization intended to promote new mathematical interest and stimulate that interest where it already exists. Meetings usually consist of lectures by UGA students and faculty on various mathematical topics. We also try to bring in guest lecturers whenever possible. Although geared toward students involved and interested in math, our lectures are designed to be accessible to anyone with a college preparatory math background. Check out the webpage:

Available Graduate Programs: Mathematics, mathematics education, engineering, meteorology, ecology, and many others, including medical school and law school.
