Course summary

The Master of Public Health is a flexible one-year degree designed to provide a broad introduction to public health. With a strong focus on Work Integrated Learning, industry connections, and practical placements (available through the Public Health Practice specialisation), you will put theory into practice and develop diverse skills and knowledge in public health. You will engage in innovative learning experiences that provide advanced work-ready skills and develop a keen analytical and social lens to address issues of global health significance.

Students seeking a two-year program may be interested in the Master of Public Health Extension.

This degree

The Master of Public Health is a truly multi-disciplinary program, offering specialisations drawn from across UOW faculties and study areas. You will be connected to the great public health challenges of our time, to the leading thinkers across disciplines, and to the employers and agencies working to improve health and well-being and reduce inequalities. The program is structured in a manner that responds to the constantly changing health and social issues both at local and international levels. Problem-based learning, case studies, and a strong focus on skills development will ensure you enter the workforce with advanced public health skills and knowledge.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Admission to the Master of Public Health requires:

  • an undergraduate degree with a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 65, plus one of the following: a one-year Honours degree, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma. At least one qualification must be in a field relevant to public health; OR
  • an undergraduate degree (minimum WAM of 65) plus significant professional or volunteer experience in a field relevant to public health (equivalent of 2 years full time)..

Applicants who do not meet the above requirements may be offered the Graduate Certificate in Public Health as a pathway into the Master of Public Health.

Examples of relevant fields include medicine, nursing, allied health (nutrition science, dietetics, exercise science), health sciences, biomedical sciences, dentistry, sociology, behavioural and social sciences, psychology, human services, emergency services, environmental health, veterinary science, health administration, business, management, law, science, mathematics and statistics, economics, policy studies, development studies.

Entry to the Public Health Research specialisation requires a WAM of 75 or greater in your prior studies.

Students wishing to take PGPH940 Public Health Practice will require a WAM of 65 across all completed subjects.

CREDIT FOR PRIOR LEARNING

If you can demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes for our subjects through prior learning at equivalent postgraduate-level study, you may be eligible for credit for prior learning towards your degree.
