Duration of studies and dedication regime
Duration
The maximum period of study for full-time doctoral studies is three years, counted from the date of admission to the programme to the date of submission of the doctoral thesis. The academic committee of the doctoral programme may authorise a doctoral candidate to pursue doctoral studies on a part-time basis. In this case, the maximum period of study is five years, counting from the date of admission to the programme to the date of submission of the doctoral thesis. For calculating these periods, the date of admission is considered to be the date of the first enrolment for tutorials, and the date of submission the moment in which the Doctoral School officially deposits the doctoral thesis.
For full-time doctoral candidates, the minimum period of study is two years, counted from the date of an applicant's admission to the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited; for part-time doctoral candidates it is four years. When there are justified grounds for doing so, and the thesis supervisor and academic tutor have given their authorisation, doctoral candidates may request that the academic committee of their doctoral programme exempt them from the minimum period of study requirement.
The calculation of periods of study will not include periods of absence due to illness, pregnancy or any other reason provided for in the regulations in force. Students who find themselves in any of these circumstances must notify the academic committee of the doctoral programme, which, where appropriate, must inform the Doctoral School. Doctoral candidates may also temporarily withdraw from the programme for up to one year, and this period may be extended for an additional year. Doctoral candidates who wish to interrupt their studies must submit a justified request to the academic committee of the doctoral programme, which will decide whether or not to approve the request. Each programme will establish conditions for readmission to doctoral studies.
Extension
If full-time doctoral candidates have not applied to deposit their thesis by the end of the three-year period of study, the academic committee of the programme may authorise an extension of up to one year. In exceptional circumstances, a further one-year extension may be granted, subject to the conditions established by the corresponding doctoral programme. In the case of part-time doctoral candidates, an extension of two years may be authorised. In both cases, in exceptional circumstances a further one-year extension may be granted by the Doctoral School's Standing Committee, upon the submission of a reasoned application by the academic committee of the doctoral programme.
Dismissal from the doctoral programme
A doctoral candidate may be dismissed from a doctoral programme for the following reasons:
- The doctoral candidate submitting a justified application to withdraw from the programme.
- The maximum period of study and of extensions thereof ending.
- The doctoral candidate not having enrolled every academic year (unless he or she has been authorised to temporarily withdraw).
- The doctoral candidate failing two consecutive assessments.
- The doctoral candidate having disciplinary proceedings filed against him or her that rule that he or she must be dismissed from the UPC.
Dismissal from the programme implies that doctoral candidates cannot continue studying at the UPC and the closing of their academic record. This notwithstanding, they may apply to the academic committee of the programme for readmission and the committee must reevaluate them in accordance with the criteria established in the regulations.

Admissions body
The programme has an academic committee that assesses student applications. Each month, the committee reviews applications submitted through the pre-enrolment application.
The doctoral programme has a specific form for doctoral students to indicate their scientific and technical interests. Based on this information, and taking into account the needs and capacity of research groups, the academic committee channels the applications accepted so that tutors and thesis supervisors can be assigned.
If the academic committee deems that additional training is required for an applicant to be admitted, it determines what bridging courses the student will be required to take to ensure that they have the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities (up to a maximum of 60 ECTS credits).
Training complements
Bridging courses may provide research or cross-disciplinary training, but in no case may doctoral students be required to enrol for 60 or more ECTS credits.
Students will complete any additional training within the framework of the master's degree in Chemical Engineering offered by the Barcelona East School of Engineering (EEBE-UPC) or by taking cross-disciplinary training courses organised by the UPC. This master's degree includes a specialisation module in Green Chemical Process Engineering (GCPE), which offers students the option of acquiring a specialisation in which the Department has a solid track record in both teaching and research. This specialisation focuses on advanced design of chemical process plants, with particular emphasis on state-of-the-art methods for safety and risk analysis and environmental protection.

Monitoring and evaluation of the doctoral student
Procedure for the preparation and defense of the research plan
Doctoral candidates must submit a research plan, which will be included in their doctoral student activity report, before the end of the first year. The plan may be improved over the course of the doctoral degree. It must be endorsed by the tutor and the supervisor, and it must include the method that is to be followed and the aims of the research.
At least one of these annual assessments will include a public presentation and defence of the research plan and work done before a committee composed of three doctoral degree holders, which will be conducted in the manner determined by each academic committee. The examination committee awards a Pass or Fail mark. A Pass mark is a prerequisite for continuing on the doctoral programme. Doctoral candidates awarded a Fail mark must submit a new research plan for assessment by the academic committee of the doctoral programme within six months.
The committee assesses the research plan every year, in addition to all of the other activities in the doctoral student activity report. Doctoral candidates who are awarded two consecutive Fail marks for the research plan will be obliged to definitely withdraw from the programme.
If they change the subject of their thesis, they must submit a new research plan.

Procedure for assignment of tutor and thesis director
The academic committee of the doctoral programme assigns a thesis supervisor to each doctoral candidate when they are admitted or enrol for the first time, taking account of the thesis supervision commitment referred to in the admission decision.
The thesis supervisor will ensure that training activities carried out by the doctoral candidate are coherent and suitable, and that the topic of the candidate’s doctoral thesis will have an impact and make a novel contribution to knowledge in the relevant field. The thesis supervisor will also guide the doctoral candidate in planning the thesis and, if necessary, tailoring it to any other projects or activities undertaken. The thesis supervisor will generally be a UPC professor or researcher who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience. This includes PhD-holding staff at associated schools (as determined by the Governing Council) and UPC-affiliated research institutes (in accordance with corresponding collaboration and affiliation agreements). When thesis supervisors are UPC staff members, they also act as the doctoral candidate’s tutor.
PhD holders who do not meet these criteria (as a result of their contractual relationship or the nature of the institution to which they are attached) must be approved by the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee in order to participate in a doctoral programme as researchers with documented research experience.
The academic committee of the doctoral programme may approve the appointment of a PhD-holding expert who is not a UPC staff member as a candidate’s thesis supervisor. In such cases, the prior authorisation of the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee is required. A UPC staff member who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience must also be proposed to act as a co-supervisor, or as the doctoral candidate’s tutor if one has not been assigned.
A thesis supervisor may step down from this role if there are justified reasons (recognised as valid by the committee) for doing so. If this occurs, the academic committee of the doctoral programme will assign the doctoral candidate a new thesis supervisor.
Provided there are justified reasons for doing so, and after hearing any relevant input from the doctoral candidate, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may assign a new thesis supervisor at any time during the period of doctoral study.
If there are academic reasons for doing so (an interdisciplinary topic, joint or international programmes, etc.) and the academic committee of the programme gives its approval, an additional thesis supervisor may be assigned. Supervisors and co-supervisors have the same responsibilities and academic recognition.
The maximum number of supervisors of a doctoral thesis is two: a supervisor and a co-supervisor.
For theses carried out under a cotutelle agreement or as part of an Industrial Doctorate, if necessary and if the agreement foresees it this maximum number of supervisors may not apply. This notwithstanding, the maximum number of supervisors belonging to the UPC is two.
Permanence
The academic committee of the programme may authorise an extension of up to one year for full-time doctoral candidates who have not applied to deposit their thesis by the end of the three-year period of study, in the terms outlined in the Academic Regulations for Doctoral Studies of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. In the case of part-time candidates, an extension of two years may be authorised. In both cases, in exceptional circumstances a further one-year extension may be granted by the Doctoral School's Standing Committee, upon the submission of a reasoned application by the academic committee of the doctoral programme.
International Mention
The doctoral degree certificate may include International Doctorate mention. In this case, the doctoral candidate must meet the following requirements:
a) During the period of study leading to the award of the doctoral degree, the doctoral candidate must have spent at least three months at a respected higher education institution or research centre outside Spain to complete courses or do research work. The stays and activities carried out must be endorsed by the thesis supervisor and authorised by the academic committee of the programme. The candidate must provide a certifying document issued by the person responsible for the research group of the body or bodies where the stay or activity was completed. This information will be added to the doctoral student’s activity report.
b) Part of the thesis (at least the summary and conclusions) must be written and presented in one of the languages commonly used for science communication in the relevant field of knowledge, which must not be an official language of Spain. This rule does not apply to stays and reports in Spanish or to experts from Spanish-speaking countries.
c) At least two PhD-holding experts belonging to a higher education institution or research centre outside Spain must have issued officially certified reports on the thesis.
d) The thesis examination committee must have included at least one PhD-holding expert from a higher education or research institution outside Spain who was not responsible for the candidate’s stay abroad (point a) above).
e) The thesis defence must have taken place on UPC premises or, in the case of joint programmes, at the location specified in the collaboration agreement.

Thesis abstract: The objective of this thesis is to contribute to the development of mathematical modeling of Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) aimed at the competent treatment of recalcitrant organic compounds in wastewater. In particular, the Ph.D. thesis first focuses on developing mathematical models of AOPs, implementing these models in software tools, and enabling a deeper understanding of the complex nature of these processes through the detailed simulation of the evolution of chemical species along the reaction time for diverse and unexplored scenarios. Hence, these tools are next used for fitting the models to the experimental data obtained in the laboratory in the course of the thesis or reported in the literature. The fitted models are analyzed and refined through sensitivity analysis techniques, and finally, they are validated and their accuracy assessed. Models are mainly used for addressing operational issues, but also design aspects are considered in regard of the simulation of integrated processes using AOPs and conventional biotreatment processes. The thesis specifically addresses the development of a model for AOPs, above all photo-Fenton processes, including flexible H2O2 supply given as a function of time. The model contributes a practical tool aimed at providing model-based simulation for solving the problem of the management of the H2O2 dosage profile of the photo-Fenton process. The thesis also addresses the problem of the pH dependency of the photo-Fenton by modeling the possibility of performing the photo-Fenton process at near-neutral pH. This is studied by considering the use of iron complexing agents such as ethylenediamine disuccinic acid (EDDS). In a subsequent stage, as a step forward in improving photo-Fenton processes, a reported kinetic model of the Fe(3+)-EDDS mediated photo-Fenton process is extended to include the reactions occurring in the absence of H2O2, when EDDS(¿ 3- )radical generated from the lysis of the Fe(3+)-EDDS complex is responsible for the organic matter degradation. This is achieved by adopting a novel semi-empirical approach based on lumping radical species.Ozonation of wastewater is also studied as a different case of AOPs, focusing in the modeling of ozone decay during the treatment of secondary effluents containing organic matter. This is addressed by proposing a new model, based again in the used of lumped or surrogate concentrations. The ozone model developed is shown to be capable of describing the complex profile of the ozone at different initial concentrations, and has proved accurate to describe the experimental data obtained in the lab, as well as data reported in the literature. The modeling approach adopted in this thesis has also been used to explore integrated processes combining AOPs with other processes, namely conventional biotreatment processes which main acknowledged limitation is the incapacity to remove recalcitrant compounds from wastewaters. The study combined the AOP models developed with standard models such as ASM1 to map the correspondence between the variables employed in each model, and produce the simulation of different scenarios combining these two technologies. As a final remark, the thesis has also addressed the design and development of chemical reactors, particularly prototypes for photo-Fenton processes using 3D-printing. This last study addresses the selection of materials according to different criteria for reactor prototyping and subsequent testing of the chemical suitability of the reactor for carrying out AOPs.

Thesis abstract: Heterogeneous catalysis is one of the most important chemical technologies available today to produce most chemicals at the basis of industrial production. The transition to a greener energy production demands new challenges and new chemicals to be used as energy sources and vectors. Established processes such as methane steam reforming (MSR) are used to produce hydrogen to be used in fuel cells, and syngas which is the base reactant mixture for the synthesis of other chemicals. Bio-methane generated from biomass or other renewable sources can be used to produce hydrogen and syngas in a sustainable way.One way to improve the performance of a heterogeneous catalyst is to prepare bimetallic catalysts exploiting the synergy between two different metals for the active phase. Catalyst synthesis is also a fundamental step to control the catalytic properties of the material and ultimately to increase the sustainability of the whole process. In this PhD thesis, two bimetallic systems based on Ni-Fe and Pt-Ni were studied for methane steamreforming. Together with the incipient wetness impregnation synthesis, one of the most common industrial methods to prepare catalystsmechanochemistry synthesis was used as a green chemistry alternative. In Chapter 4, Ni-Fe bimetallic catalysts have been studied on different supports comparing the two synthesis methods, the effect of the support and the amount of Fe in the alloy. Iron is a redox promoter which can enhance the coke resistance of Ni-based catalysts, and it should provide sulphur resistance too. Thorough investigation with synchrotron in situ techniques such as XRD and NAP-XPS under reaction conditions allowedto study the catalyst structure during the reaction. The rearrangement of the Ni-Fe particles and theenrichment of Fe on the surface was observed under MSR conditions. Other catalysts based on different support have shown different behaviours: on non-reducible oxide supports, the activity of the bimetallic samples was equal or beter compared with the monometallic ones. For low-surface area CeO2, milled samples showed a great improvement of the catalytic activity due to the increased surface area and metal dispersion; for other non-reducible supports, the milled catalysts showed beter performances and in the case of the MG70 the activity of the bimetallic milled samples was as high as the monometallic, while theimpregnated samples showed lower activity with increasing Fe loading. In Chapter 5, PtNi/CeO2 catalysts have been prepared focusing on the mechanochemical synthesis and in finding the correlation between the synthesis parameters, the material¿s structure, and the catalytic activity.Platinum addition to Ni-based catalysts increases the resistance to carbon formation and the stability of metallic Ni during the reaction. The characterisation of the catalysts by in situ NAP-XPS and XANES indicated that different levels of interaction between Ni, Pt and CeO2 were obtained during the synthesis, and this has been directly correlated with the different catalytic activity. Remarkably, the surface of the bimetallic catalystwas completely free of carbon atier the reaction, while the monometallic sample clearly showed theformation of solid coke.

Thesis abstract: High-level radioactive waste, such as spent nuclear fuel (SNF) from nuclear power plants, remains dangerous for hundreds of thousands of years. To manage them properly and avoid harm to human health and the environment, deep geological repository (DGR) is considered the internationally accepted management option. The DGR is based on a multi-barrier system that isolates waste from the biosphere until its radioactivity drops to safe levels. Understanding the processes that affect the SNF is essential to ensure the long-term safety of the DGR.The release of radionuclides upon contact with groundwater depends on their chemical state and location. While some are released instantaneously, the majority remain retained in the UO2 matrix, being their release controlled by the oxidative dissolution of UO2. The composition of groundwater, rich in bicarbonate ions, can change after interacting with the different barriers. Due to the presence of cement in the DGR design, its interaction with water can produce a very alkaline leachate (pH>13) rich in calcium and silicate ions. The addition of fly ash to cement can also introduce sulphur ions to the medium, which may affect the retention of radionuclides.Gadolinia (Gd2O3) is used as a neutron absorber in light water reactors to extend the life of the fuel cycle. The incorporation of Gd into the crystalline structure of UO2 could affect the oxidation of uranium. In this work, three different approaches have been studied to evaluate this effect:Gd2O3-doped UO2 samples with different levels of porosity (to simulate the microstructure of highly burned fuel) were exposed to different atmospheres in the presence of humidity. Porosity turned out to be a critical factor in oxidation, since, in its absence, Gd inhibited oxidation, while porous samples showed a dependence on the atmosphere present, with a reactivity: synthetic air>Ar>H2. Electrochemical experiments in the presence of silicate and calcium recorded lower values of current density and corrosion potentials as Gd content increased, indicating less surface oxidation. Finally, the dissolution rate was evaluated in bicarbonate solutions at pH>9. While bicarbonate influences the dissolution rate of UO2, samples doped with Gd2O3 showed very low and constant dissolution rates. XPS analysis of the samples suggests that Gd retards the oxidation of U(V) to U(VI) and, therefore, the dissolution of UO2. In summary, these studies determined a retarding effect of gadolinium on the oxidation/dissolution of UO2.Regarding the release and migration of radionuclides, those sensitive to redox potential, such as Mo and Tc, were studied. Leaching experiments demonstrated that Mo release increases at high pH through a surface complexation mechanism promoted by OH- and the oxidation of Mo(s) to Mo(VI), with a high contribution to the instantaneous release fraction. Since Mo could buffer the oxidation of UO2, knowing the chemical state of Mo in CNG would help predict the oxidation state of UO2, and therefore the release of radionuclides. The interaction of radionuclides with minerals, such as alumina, can affect their migration. Tc is a radionuclide of great environmental concern due to its long half-life, high toxicity and mobility under oxidizing conditions. The reductive immobilization of Tc(VII) to Tc(IV) by pre-adsorbed sulphide on alumina under anoxic conditions was studied. Although the presence of alumina did not improve the retention of Tc(VII), XAS analysis determined Tc(IV), and re-oxidation experiments suggested that the Tc species obtained are stable in the presence of oxygen.

Quality
The Validation, Monitoring, Modification and Accreditation Framework (VSMA Framework) for official degrees ties the quality assurance processes (validation, monitoring, modification and accreditation) carried out over the lifetime of a course to two objectives—the goal of establishing coherent links between these processes, and that of achieving greater efficiency in their management—all with the overarching aim of improving programmes.
