Geomatics Engineering Department

About Geomatics

In this modern age of information technology, people produce millions of gigabytes of data during a day and at least 70 % of these data can somehow be regarded as spatial data, which need to be modeled, processed and analysed to extract information. Geomatics Engineering, who combines skillsets of Computer Science, Environmental Engineers, Geophysical Engineers and Geographic Information Science, is the name of the profession that works to make spatial data meaningful for everyone. Geomatics has traditionally been defined as the science, art, and technology of determining the relative positions of points above, on, or beneath the Earth’s surface. In a more general sense, geomatics can be regarded as that discipline which encompasses all methods for measuring and collecting information about the physical earth and our environment, processing that information, and disseminating a variety of resulting products to a wide range of users. Geomatics has been crucial since the beginning of civilization and today the significance of monitoring our world is becoming increasingly important as our population rises and natural resources diminish due to human activities. The geomatics discipline covers not only traditional surveying applications, but also the latest spatial information sciences and technologies such as geographic information science and systems, satellite remote sensing and global navigation satellite systems. These highly advanced technologies have been widely used for advanced scientific studies and even for ordinary daily living, such as public transport, car navigation, web based GIS applications.

Using modern ground, aerial and satellite technologies along with computers for data processing, Geomatics Engineers are now able to monitor the Earth with reliable accuracy. The Geomatics Engineering Department at Hacettepe University covers a wide range of subjects to fulfill the need of qualified engineers who can handle any type of spatial information. The department has been preparing graduates for success in their engineering careers since 2013.

Why Geomatics Engineering at Hacettepe ?

Geomatics at Hacettepe is one of only five certified Geomatics programs in the country. Our high education standards and advanced research topics help students to find the best jobs available when they graduate. As a geomatics engineer, our graduates have global and local opportunities to work in areas such as 3D city modelling, buildings, highways, railways and bridges constructions, telecommunication companies, military funded navigation projects, aerial imagery projects of several public and civil cooperation, and more. In the public sector, geomatics enginners work in government agencies, public supported private surveying offices and universities. The Department offers well-equipped laboratories supporting study and research in the area of GIS, photogrammetry, remote sensing,  geodetic and engineering surveys. Students and researchers will have a variety of opportunities in both research and practical work with these facilities.

Skills that graduates will acquire

  • Multi-disciplinary education in the use of GIS, Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing, Geodesy and Surveying methods to model the Earth and space.

  • Judgement skills to assess and use spatial data

  • Design skills to make safe and economically feasible decisions

  • Communication skills to describe findings and analysis results to other professionals and to a public
