About us
The basic philosophy of the Interdisciplinary PhD program in Biostatistics is to provide trained personnel to the academic biostatistics community, including academia, industry and government. The goal is to develop a student's ability to create new methodologies as well as address applied questions that arise from the biomedical sciences and public health.
The Interdisciplinary PhD program in Biostatistics is a joint venture between the Department of Statistics and the Division of Biostatistics in the College of Public Health. Students in this program choose between one of two specializations:
- Methodology
- Public Health
All students are admitted to the joint program and make a specialization selection after passing the Qualifier 1 Exam after one year. The first two years of coursework in both specializations are similar and students in both programs are awarded an MS degree in statistics en route to the PhD.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
International graduates of this major are approved by the Department of Homeland Security for three (3) years of work permission in the United States after graduation. Visit the Office of International Affairs website for more information.
