Mechanical and Process Engineering

Study concept

We have created a unique degree programme here at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg that combines important content from mechanical engineering and process engineering. The programme is designed so that you, as a graduate, can use the skills you have learnt to work directly in the workplace.

We have placed an emphasis on engineering fundamentals so that you can seamlessly combine the previous knowledge you have acquired at the universities where you completed your Bachelor's degree with German engineering thinking. With our special "TRAINING IN ..." courses, we want to ensure that you speak the same technical language as your colleagues trained in Germany, building on which there are further practical and application-orientated in-depth engineering subjects.

Another important part of the degree programme are modules in which you will be familiarised with the state-of-the-art simulation tools used in mechanical engineering and process engineering. The degree programme includes modules on flow simulation (CFD), strength calculation (DEM) and process simulation. Here you will be trained both theoretically and in practical exercises. The programme as a whole also focuses on project-based learning, in which you can apply your skills in small projects, mainly as group work, from the second semester onwards. As a small university, we offer very good support here. In Project Work, you will always have a contact person who will guide you through the project. Of course, we also expect you to work independently and in an engineering environment, as you are studying for a Master's degree.

In today's world, business skills and knowledge are also important for engineers. This is why we offer a wide range of modules from the field of economics, particularly in the area of electives, which teach you skills in the field of industrial engineering.

The process engineering content accompanies the mechanical engineering content throughout the four semesters of the degree programme. As a resource university, we have placed the focus here on secondary raw materials/recycling. We will continue to expand this in the coming years so that you can acquire comprehensive knowledge in the field of recycling technologies as part of the degree programme. Together with the competences from the field of mechanical engineering (conception and construction), you will also be able to develop and evaluate a design for recycling.

You will be involved in research as part of your final thesis (Master's thesis) and will be able to apply the knowledge you have learnt to practical projects and contribute to a scientific solution to an engineering problem. In this context, it is important to us that we can integrate you into our application-oriented research during your Master's thesis at the latest.

Due to the amount of content we offer you (120 ECTS points), we have not included a compulsory internship as part of the degree programme. However, we recommend that you use a semester off for a voluntary internship (six months).

The modules are all in English, and we are currently also in the process of supporting classroom teaching with digital content, such as special summaries, screencasts, lecture recordings and special digital self-tests.

The degree programme includes basic German language training as a compulsory module (German A1 or higher). However, we recommend that you study German more intensively as part of your degree programme, especially if you plan to work in Germany after graduation. TU Bergakademie Freiberg will enable you to take German courses that build on each other for the entire duration of your studies.

The MPE degree programme also hosts some international mobility study programmes, such as the "International Master of Science in Engineering, Entrepreneurship and Resources" - ENTER (as a Master's programme in EIT Raw Materials) or the "Master course in Georesources Engineering - Erasmus Mundus programme in the EIT Raw Materials" - EMerald. Students on the ENTER and EMerald mobility programmes are completing their third semester with us at TU Bergakademie Freiberg.
