1. Overview

  • The Kyushu University Graduate School of Dental Science emphasizes the cultivation of researchers, educators, and well-trained professional doctors, who will be capable of taking international leadership roles.
  • The Graduate School of Dental Science offers students the opportunity to undertake doctoral studies in English whilst studying at a Japanese university. The program is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to complete high-level research in dentistry.
  • The Graduate School of Dental Science offers three types of doctoral degrees: Doctor of Philosophy (Dental Science), Doctor of Philosophy, and Doctor of Philosophy (Clinical Dentistry).
    A Doctorate in Doctor of Philosophy (Dental Science) is awarded to students who specialize in dental research and have obtained sufficient knowledge and skills to undertake independent research.
    A Doctorate in Doctor of Philosophy is awarded to students who are engaged in advanced academic research related to dental science and can undertake cutting-edge research in a wide range of fields.
    A Doctorate in Doctor of Philosophy (Clinical Dentistry) is awarded to students who specialize in clinical research, have the ability to undertake clinical research, and who can take a leadership role as a highly skilled professional in the future.

2. Admission Requirements

International students must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Graduates who have completed or are expected to complete an 18-year curriculum education in a foreign country (major in Dentistry, Medical Science or Veterinary Medicine) by the date of enrollment.
  • Applicants who have completed a 16-year curriculum education and have 2 years of research experience at a university or research institution, and whose research is evaluated by the faculty as having the same level as a graduate in Dentistry, Medical Science or Veterinary Medicine.
  • Those who have received, or are expected to receive a bachelor’s degree or a degree equivalent to the bachelor’s by date of enrollment by completing a 5-year course or longer (includes completing the course by taking classes in a correspondence course provided by a foreign university or an equivalent foreign facility in Japan, or completing the course at a scholastic organization admitted by the School Education System in the foreign country concerned) at a foreign university or other foreign schools(limited to the institution and its overall situation of educational research activities admitted by the person certified by the foreign government or relevant authorities, or the equivalent institution specially designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports,Science and Technology)

If the applicant cannot meet the above educational requirements, It may be possible to register as a research student to make up the number of years required. Please refer to the link below for the requirements to register as a research student. Once the admission requirements have been met, the applicant can then apply to the Ph.D. program.

3. How to apply

PRE-ADMISSION PROCEDURES

  • Look for a “Kyushu U faculty member whom you would want as your supervisor.” You may start with Table 1 below to discover the research areas available and the names of the researchers who could serve as your supervisor.
  • Get in contact with your potential supervisor with the support from the Kyushu U Admissions Support Desk.
  • Discuss with your potential supervisor when you would like to enroll in the graduate school

Note: Please note that it may take about 3 weeks for the Support Desk to inform you whether the researcher you have designated as your potential supervisor is available for contact. So please make sure that you make a formal request to the Support Desk well in advance.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

  • Once you have received provisional acceptance from your supervisor, please make sure you apply within the specified deadline for the period that you would like to enroll. Please download the application guidelines from the link below

4. Accommodation, Health/Accident Insurance & Student Support

  • Accommodation
    Most Ph.D. students will be offered accommodation for their first semester (half a year) in Kyushu University International Student House. After the first semester students may be offered a place in the university’s dormitory if there is availability. If not, then students would have to rent a place outside on their own.
  • Health Insurance
    International students must join the national health insurance scheme. For a small monthly charge, 70% of health costs are covered by insurance. All students of Kyushu University must enroll in the Gakkensai. This insurance cover injuries from accidents occurred when commuting to school and also during school activities.
  • Student Support
    All international Ph.D. students will be provided with assistance from the international student support team during their first three months at the University. The support service ensures that adjusting to life in Japan goes smoothly for all incoming international students.

5. Tuition, Other Fees & Living Costs

The various university fees and estimated living costs are as follows (please note that fees are reviewed on an annual basis):

  • Kyushu University Registration Fee: 30,000 yen
  • Kyushu University Entrance Fee: 282,000 yen
  • Kyushu University Tuition Fee per Semester: 267,900 yen (Annual amount 535,800 yen)
  • Monthly living costs: 100,000-120,000 yen

*All fees are waived for Japanese government (MEXT) scholarship students
Please note that the registration fee is non-refundable under all circumstances.

6. Financial Aid & Scholarship information

  • Students may apply for tuition and enrollment fees waiver. More information about the tuition and enrollment fees waiver will be sent to students after enrollment. Please note that students need to meet the necessary requirements to apply and all applications will be subjected to screening.

    (1) Special Japanese government (MEXT) scholarship for “Oral Health re-building Advanced Dental Research Course for MENA countries” program

    (2) Japanese government (MEXT) scholarship.

    (3) Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) scholarship.

    (4) Other scholarships.

7. Students with special needs

The University provides consultation for applicants with disabilities who may require special arrangements during the entrance examinations or in classes after enrollment. Please contact the student affairs office prior to the application process as soon as possible as it sometimes takes extra time to decide on the arrangements depending on the situation.
