Mathematics - Master Programme

Master's programme · 2 years · 120 credits

Description

Do you want to become an expert at solving advanced mathematical problems? Are you perhaps attracted by mathematical reasoning or by creating new algorithms that can, for example, contribute to the development of robots or to making it easier to find tumors on X-ray plates? The Master's programme in mathematics provides opportunities for a future career both in the research world and in business and the public sector.

The Master's programme has two specialisations - mathematics and numerical analysis. Both specialisations have a flexible structure with the possibility of individual adaptation and offer a wide range of courses that give you both advanced theoretical knowledge and practical skills. You can choose different areas where you learn to work with purely mathematical problems or with mathematical problem solving in application areas relevant to industry and administration.

The Master's programme is closely connected to reasearch. All teachers involved in the programme are researchers, and the proportion of teacher-led time is high. The research at the Center for Mathematical Sciences covers a wide range from interdisciplinary theoretical mathematics to specific applications. The interdisciplinary research is conducted in partial differential equations, complex analysis, harmonic analysis, operator theory, differential geometry, Lie algebra theory, representation theory and optimisation. Some of the applied research areas concern the design and analysis of numerical methods and include creating new algorithms for simulations of air currents in climate modeling or aircraft design and proving their properties. Other examples are mathematical analysis of water waves using differential equations and mathematical analysis of uncertainty principles and how to divide complicated functions into simpler building blocks, with applications in e.g. signal processing. Throughout the education, great emphasis is placed on problem identification, problem analysis and problem solving. You practice both oral and written communication, gain good experience of working in groups and learn practical tools of importance for professional mathematicians.

The two specialisations are not advertised separately, you choose the specialisation through your choice of courses within the programme. The teaching is in English.

Program structure

You choose the first semester's courses at a introductory meeting. All students are offered study during the programme to make the most appropriate choice of courses before each semester. The choice of courses depends to a large extent on which courses you have read before the master's studies and which future plans you have. If you are planning postgraduate studies in mathematics, you can choose 90 higher education credits in advanced courses in mathematics to immerse yourself in the subject. If you are instead interested in applications and plan to work with applied mathematics directly after graduation, you can choose up to 30 higher education credits in another subject that is relevant to the applications, for example economics or physics. During the second year of study, you continue to build your skills based on your subjects of interest. The degree project is 30 higher education credits and consists of an independent minor research or development project based on current research. It can either be connected to ongoing projects at the department or at companies or other departments within or outside the university.

Career opportunities

After graduation, there are several different career paths depending on which subject profile you have chosen. The Master's programme gives you a solid ground for postgraduate education in mathematics, but you can also choose a career path outside the academy and then find attractive jobs in areas where there is a need to solve mathematical problems both in industry and in public administration and other organisations.

Requirements and selection

Entry requirements

Bachelor’s degree of at least 180 credits or the equivalent, including at least 90 credits in mathematics, or at least 60 credits in mathematics and at least 30 credits in numerical analysis and computational science. The latter alternative applies to applicants who intend to pursue a Master’s degree in mathematics, specialising in numerical analysis.

Proficiency in English equivalent to English 6/B from Swedish upper-secondary school.

Selection criteria

Based on grades awarded for previous academic courses, particularly qualifying courses, as well as a statement of purpose for the application that clarifies the applicant’s objective with the programme (from the applicant’s “Summary sheet”).

English language requirements

Most of Lund University’s programmes require English Level 6 (unless otherwise stated under 'Entry requirements'). This is the equivalent of an overall IELTS score of 6.5 or a TOEFL score of 90. There are several ways to prove your English language proficiency – check which proof is accepted at the University Admissions in Sweden website. All students must prove they meet English language requirements by the deadline, in order to be considered for admission.

How to apply

Lund University uses a national application system run by University Admissions in Sweden. It is only possible to apply during the application periods.

When to apply for studies

Step 1: Apply online

  • Check that you meet the entry requirements of the programme or course you are interested in (refer to the section above on this webpage).
  • Start your application – go to the University Admissions in Sweden website where you create an account and select programmes/courses during the application period.
Visit the University Admissions in Sweden website
  • Rank your programme/course choices in order of preference and submit them before the application deadline.

Step 2: Submit documents

  • Read about how to document your eligibility and how to submit your documents at the University Admissions in Sweden website. Follow any country-specific document rules for Master's studies or Bachelor's studies
    Country-specific requirements for Bachelor's studies – universityadmissions.se
    Country-specific requirements for Master's studies – universityadmissions.se

  • Get all your documents ready:
    - official transcripts and high school diploma (Bachelor's applicants)
    - official transcripts and degree certificate or proof that you are in the final year of your Bachelor's (Master's applicants)
    - passport/ID (all applicants) and
    - proof of English proficiency (all applicants).

  • Prepare programme-specific documents if stated in the next paragraph on this webpage.
  • Upload or send all required documents to University Admissions before the document deadline.
  • Pay the application fee (if applicable – refer to the section below on this webpage) before the document deadline.

* Note that the process is different if you are applying as an exchange student or as a part of a cooperation programme (such as Erasmus+).
* If you have studied your entire Bachelor's programme in Sweden and all of your academic credits are in Ladok, you do not have to submit transcripts or your diploma when applying for a Master's programme. However, there may still be other documents you need to submit! See the link below.
