Risk Management and Insurance, B.B.A.

The Bachelor of Business Administration in Risk Management and Insurance is offered through Jones College of Business.

Insurance—many may be well acquainted with this subject if he or she has experienced the pangs and the panic of redesigning the front bumper of Dad's car. Insurance is one of those things we purchase and hope we never have to use. Most of us seldom pull the policy out of the file, but we're glad it's there or somewhere. To the average consumer, purchasing insurance is gaining peace of mind and financial security against the possibility of a catastrophic event. A student who studies insurance at MTSU will interact with industry professionals, have the opportunity to join an award-winning honorary insurance fraternity, and earn scholarships and internships. In addition to meeting the Jennings A. Jones College of Business requirements, a major in Risk Management and Insurance consists of 24 semester hours of finance and requires a minimum of 2.00 GPA. At least 50 percent of the required major hours must be taken in residence at MTSU. The program below includes a Business Administration minor. An alternate business minor may be chosen, but it may require total hours for graduation to exceed 120.

A solid foundation for your career

The Risk Management & Insurance program hosts an annual career fair to connect students with employers. The program also partners with the designation-granting agencies so that students can earn two parts of the Chartered Property and Casualty (CPCU) and two parts of the Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designations when they perform well in designated courses. Classes incorporate real-world applications to make topics come alive, and the case studies used are valuable in helping to develop critical thinking skills. Many scholarship opportunities are available for students in the program. Typical scholarship awards are $1,500 for majors and $1,000 for minors per academic year.

Industry pros rank MTSU's insurance program No. 1 in national survey

MTSU's No. 1 ranking was highlighted in an article for the A.M. Best Best's Review magazine, which outlined how the Jones College of Business Risk Management and Insurance Program transitioned from a concentration to a full major four years ago when MTSU professor Dave Wood came to the university as the new Martin Chair of Insurance.
