Why Nursing @ Memorial?

Memorial University offers exciting Nursing programs for students who wish to continue their nursing education. The online Master of Science in Nursing (MScN) programs offer students the opportunity to engage with classmates from across the country and continue to work while they study. The on-campus PhD program helps students lay the foundation for a program of research in nursing. All of the programs prepare nurses at an advanced level to contribute to evidence-informed practice and to provide leadership for change, at both the systems and individual levels, in a variety of practice settings.

Description of programs

• Master of Science in Nursing (MScN) – The MScN program has two options: 1) Practicum (course based); and 2) Nurse Practitioner (NP) stream. Both options are delivered online.
  
  
• In the Practicum option, during their online course work and practicum projects, students learn to integrate and synthesize philosophical perspectives, theories, research and skills. Students choose a practicum project relevant to their interest and work setting. The project, conducted over two terms, allows students to consolidate their learning, address a real need for change, and demonstrate advanced nursing practice competencies.
  
  
• In the Nurse Practitioner option, nurses are prepared at an advanced level to practice as NPs in a variety of practice settings. The program consists of online courses, some week-long on-campus learning and evaluation sessions, and preceptor-supervised clinical practice. NPs have advanced knowledge and decision-making skills in health assessment, diagnosis, and health care management of common and complex conditions.
  
  
• Post Master's Nurse Practitioner Graduate Diploma – This diploma is designed for Master of Science in Nursing graduates who wish to pursue nurse practitioner preparation for the role of the NP.
  
  
• Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) – The PhD program is offered in areas reflective of the strength and expertise of current faculty members in the Faculty of Nursing. All candidates will be required to attend as full-time students during the first six semesters (two academic years) of the program. The program consists of course work, two internships, graduate seminars, and a dissertation.

Applicants to the PhD program must have a potential supervisor identified and confirmed prior to submission of their application. Visit the Faculty of Nursing website for a list of faculty members available to act as supervisors or co-supervisors, their research interests, and contact information. You may also use the Yaffle search application to find a supervisor you may wish to work with.

Minimum admission requirements

• MScN Practicum Option – Bachelor's degree (minimum 3.0 CGPA) in Nursing; an undergraduate course in each of statistics and nursing research (minimum ‘B’ (65%) in each); license to practice nursing in jurisdiction; and minimum of one year (1950 hours) of nursing practice experience.
  
  
• MScN Nurse Practitioner Option – Bachelor's degree (minimum 3.0 CGPA) in Nursing; an undergraduate course in each of statistics and nursing research (minimum ‘B’ (65%) in each); license to practice nursing in Newfoundland and Labrador; and minimum of two years (3900 hours) of nursing practice experience.
  
  
• Post Master's Nurse Practitioner Graduate Diploma – Master’s degree in Nursing (minimum 3.0 CGPA); a graduate course in each of statistics, research and nursing theories (minimum ‘B’ (65%) in each); Bachelor's degree (minimum 3.0 CGPA) in Nursing; license to practice nursing in Newfoundland and Labrador; and two years (3900 hours) of clinical nursing experience.
  
  
• PhD – Master’s degree in Nursing with a minimum CGPA of 3.4; a graduate course in statistics or graduate course(s) in research (including qualitative and quantitative approaches with some advanced statistical analysis in the quantitative work); and license to practice nursing in jurisdiction.

Please note that for both the MScN (Nurse Practitioner option) and Graduate Diploma program applicants must be residents of Newfoundland and Labrador. Out of province applicants will not be considered.
