Program handbook

Description

From the control of robots to the optimisation of modern vehicles, from the design of appliances to biomechanics, Mechatronics Engineers become involved in a diverse range of exciting modern technologies. This may also include the design, automation and operational performance of electro-mechanical systems.

Completing these two bachelor degrees together enables students to complement their technical skills with business acumen, entrepreneurism and the ability to commercialise engineering innovations. Students learn how to manage people and finances, propose new business opportunities and market their product.

Academic requirements for program completion

Total units required

410 units

Program duration

5 years full-time or part-time equivalent up to 12 years maximum.

International students studying this program on campus are required to enrol full time to comply with their student visa requirements and complete their study in the standard minimum program duration. International students requiring enrolment advice should review the program plan corresponding to the semester and year of commencement and can contact their Program Advisor at ProgramAdvice@newcastle.edu.au

Program requirements

For all combined programs and in accordance with the Program Management Procedure Manual - Coursework, the core and minimum requirements for each single degree component must be met in each combined program. This has been done economically, exploiting overlaps where possible, so that accreditation of either program is not compromised.

The Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering (Honours)/Bachelor of Business is a five year program, students are required to complete 410 units, which is comprised of:

  • 340 units of core courses; and
  • 70 units towards a major (10 units of Core courses also count towards the major for a total of 80 units). Students may choose either:
    • The Leadership and Management Major, made up of 30 units are compulsory courses and 40 units from the course list; or
    • The Entrepreneurship and Innovation Major, made upo of 40 units are compulsory courses and 30 units from the course list.

Step-out Information

The program has a duration of 5 years full time (or part time equivalent). It is possible for a student to 'step out' with a single degree award only and not complete the combined program they are enrolled in. In order to do this, a student would be required to complete all the single degree requirements for their preferred degree and may be required to complete any omitted courses that are not included in the combined degreeOmitted Courses:

  • Bachelor of Business core course STAT1060 Business Decision Making (10 units) has been omitted from the program.

A student wishing to 'step out' with a single degree from this combined program should contact their Program Convenor or Academic Program Advisor (ProgramAdvice@newcastle.edu.au) for further information.

Physics Pathways

Students may count PHYS1205 in lieu of PHYS1210 with Program Convenor approval.

Additional Information

  • Students wishing to undertake this program on a part-time basis are advised to contact the Program Convenor or Academic Program Advisor (ProgramAdvice@newcastle.edu.au) for advice on optimum selection of courses for part-time enrolment.
