About this Program

Prepare to thrive in the rapidly evolving fields of computer-aided design and manufacturing technologies in the continuous pursuit of quality products and shorter production cycles.

Program Highlights

  • Our program carries a particular emphasis in PLM solutions for the collaborative data environment. Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is an integrated, information-driven approach to all aspects of a product’s life from design inception to manufacture, deployment, maintenance, and disposal at the end of its useful life.

Careers

Check out these ideas from ODU Career Development Services and the Occupational Information Network (O*NET). A median salary is a midpoint of what people typically earn—half of those surveyed earned above the median salary, and half earned below.

Mechanical Engineering Technicians

$58,180 Median Salary

Apply theory and principles of mechanical engineering to modify, develop, test, or calibrate machinery and equipment under direction of engineering staff or physical scientists.

Mechanical Drafters

$58,150 Median Salary

Prepare detailed working diagrams of machinery and mechanical devices, including dimensions, fastening methods, and other engineering information.

Mechanical Engineers

$91,500 Median Salary

Perform engineering duties in planning and designing tools, engines, machines, and other mechanically functioning equipment. Oversee installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment such as centralized heat, gas, water, and steam systems.

Mechanical Engineering Technologists

$64,550 Median Salary

Assist mechanical engineers in such activities as generation, transmission, or use of mechanical or fluid energy. Prepare layouts of machinery or equipment or plan the flow of work. May conduct statistical studies or analyze production costs.

Requirements

What are the requirements to apply for Mechanical Engineering at ODU?
Students entering the Master of Engineering program in Mechanical Engineering should meet the minimum university admission requirements Graduate Admission.

The applicant must have earned an undergraduate degree from an accredited university in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, engineering mechanics, or a closely related discipline, such as physics or mathematics, and must also meet Old Dominion University’s general requirements for admission. Applicants with degrees in disciplines other than mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering are required to complete up to three leveling courses. A remedial study plan will be designed for the applicant by the GPD in order to prepare the student for graduate work in the shortest possible time. The selected courses are subject to satisfying the prerequisites listed in the catalog. If an applicant already has a minor in mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering, then no leveling courses are necessary.

Cost

Estimated rates for the 2023-24 academic year. Rates are subject to change. Anyone that is not a current Virginia resident will be charged non-resident rates. That includes international students.
