General Education Option
In this non-specialist program, students will learn through lectures, seminars, field experiences, service learning (learning while placed in an educational setting) and by distance education.
Admission Requirements
Applicants will meet the minimum Simon Fraser University admission requirements. See Undergraduate Admission.
Internal Transfer from another program at SFU
Simon Fraser University students can apply to the Bachelor of General Studies (Education) program for approval at the start of each semester after completing 6 units in lower level education course work (EDUC 100 is recommended).
Admission is competitive and is based on CGPA. If one or more courses have been duplicated (repeated) the higher grade from all course attempts will be used in calculating the CGPA.
Program Requirements
Students complete 120 units including at least 45 upper division units. A 2.00 graduation grade point average (GPA) and upper division GPA is required. With the exception of EDUC 401, 402, 403, 405 and 406, courses completed in any faculty may be used to satisfy degree requirements, but course admission is subject to the prerequisites of various departments.

An introduction to a small but representative sample of basic questions and issues in education. Students will examine questions relating to: the concept or idea of education; learning and the learner; teaching and the teacher; and more generally, the broader contexts of education. This course also introduces students to different ways of exploring educational questions and issues from philosophical and critical analysis, to historical and cross-cultural studies, to empirical research. Cannot be taken for credit by students with credit for 300 and 400 level education courses. Writing/Breadth-Humanities.

Provides opportunities for prospective educators to begin their development as reflective practitioners. Through readings, classroom activities and discussions, and interactions with students and practicing teachers, students will be exposed to various educational issues and questions. They will be given time to explore their own values and beliefs about education and teaching. Time may be spent observing in a selection of educational settings, and there may be opportunities to work with learners individually, and in small and large groups. Students enrolled in or with credit for EDUC 401, 402, 403 or holding a teaching certificate may not take this course for credit.

Building on the experience of EDUC 252, prospective educators will continue to develop their reflective practice. Various educational issues related to the caring for learners and the creation of learning communities will be explored. Students will spend time in educational settings exploring the importance of connected educational experiences for learners. Prerequisite: EDUC 252. Students with credit for EDUC 401 or holding a teaching certificate may not take this course for credit. Writing.
Additional requirements are satisfied through completion of the general education option, as specified below. Note: EDUC 100W, EDUC 252 and EDUC 352W must be completed before starting the Professional Development Program (PDP).
General Education Option
In addition to the courses specified above, students who choose this option will complete nine lower division and 15 upper division units in EDUC courses.
Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements
Students admitted to Simon Fraser University beginning in the fall 2006 term must meet writing, quantitative and breadth requirements as part of any degree program they may undertake. See Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth Requirements for university-wide information.

Residency Requirements and Transfer Credit
- At least half of the program's total units must be earned through Simon Fraser University study.
- At least two thirds of the program's total upper division units must be earned through Simon Fraser University study.
Elective Courses
In addition to the courses listed above, students should consult an academic advisor to plan the remaining required elective courses.
Transfer Credit
Students may transfer a maximum of 60 units into the BGS (Education) from accredited institutions. Students from SFU approved programs such as AHCOTE, the Professional Linking Program or other approved Faculty of Education programs may transfer an additional 30 units from an accredited degree-granting institution, providing 30 of the required 45 upper division units are Simon Fraser University courses, and any W course within the required 45 must be completed at Simon Fraser University.
Also note that any minor program must include at least seven upper division units earned at Simon Fraser University.
