about the program

Materials Science is an interdisciplinary educational program at Skoltech related to research in various focus areas including Advanced Materials, Energy Materials, Carbon Materials, Metals and Composites, Biology Materials, and cross-cutting Computational Materials. The broad educational program builds upon several core courses taught by faculty members of Center for Energy Science and Technology and multiple elective courses delivered by members of other centers including Photonics Center and Materials Center. Our lecturers conduct cutting edge research in Materials Science as evidenced by high median h-index ~30, top-rated publications and patents. In addition to the specialized expertise, the program brings an interdisciplinary mix of engineering and natural sciences that is unique for universities in Russia and beyond. Other core aspects of the program are industry immersion and the entrepreneurship and innovation component. The education program consists of core and elective courses with recommendations for three tracks: Experimental Materials Science, Computational Materials Science, and Materials Engineering.

Our graduates will get all the necessary knowledge and skills to

apply the acquired fundamental and practical knowledge and expertise to develop new or improve existing organic, inorganic, and polymer materials for new energy storage batteries, catalysis, bioimplants, sensors, electronics, etc.

design and conduct experiments targeted to creating new materials, e.g. solid-state and hydrothermal synthesis, etc., and to characterization of them, e.g. operando electron microscopy and XRD structural characterization, electrochemical measurements of catalytic activity and battery-related performance

search, mine, analyze and interpret scientific and related data, using modern analytical research tools, advanced techniques and software
4
acquire hands-on experience in device prototyping, such as metal-ion batteries, fuel cells, gas sensors, flexible screens, etc., and use it in their future career

communicate and work effectively in international and multidisciplinary environments on various projects with research groups or industry teams

about Skoltech

In the summer between 1st and 2nd years of study, students gain practical experience in an 8-week long internship at leading corporate and research organisations.

Each program includes courses about commercialising projects, intellectual property law and business skills to prepare Skoltech graduates in their ventures and careers.
