The student teachers on this course learn these skills in stimulated and professional practice contexts, which are underpinned by the philosophy of interdisciplinary learning. This results in teachers who are reflexive, self-critical, evidenced-based and prepared for the challenges of teaching within higher education.
This course is designed for a range of healthcare practitioners, including health science professionals, nurses, and midwives pursuing careers in clinical health sciences education.
This programme has the potential to enhance career opportunities and promotional prospects. Graduates from the programme have pursued careers in the health sector where education assessment, curriculum design and research are featured. The focus of most graduates from the programme is a career in education delivery and research.
Nurses and midwives who complete the M.Sc. in Clinical Health Sciences Education will be eligible to apply for registration as a nurse tutor (RNT) or midwifery tutor (RMT) with The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). Applicants who hold an M.Sc. in a health sciences subject may complete the Postgraduate and will also be eligible to apply for registration as an RNT/RMT.
Year One usually starts with a full week of studying in September and continues thereafter generally one to two days per week for the remainder of the academic year. CHSE students are required to undertake a minimum of 80 hours classroom teaching and 20 hours clinical teaching during this academic year. The teaching must be at Level 8 or Level 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). It is the student’s responsibility to secure all their teaching hours prior to commencing the course: applicants are required to confirm their teaching arrangement in writing with their application.
Year Two consists of workshops and classes throughout the academic year. A blended learning approach is utilised in the delivery of theoretical content, which includes lectures, group discussions and self-directed learning. The assessment process is a combination of written and practical assignments. At the end of Year Two, Masters students are required to submit a dissertation on a subject related to their field of study.
The P.Grad.Dip. programme for nursing or midwifery applicants who do not hold a M.Sc. in Nursing or an M.Sc. in Midwifery offers four modules: The Psychology and Sociology of Education; Theory and Practice of Clinical Health Sciences Education; Facilitating Learning in the Practice Environment; Curriculum Issues in Health Sciences Education.
The M.Sc. is taken over two years. Year One offers the same modules as the P.Grad.Dip. as well as a Advancing the Theoretical Foundations for Nursing module. Year Two includes Theory and Practice of Research Methods for Healthcare, and a Dissertation.
The M.Sc. for interdisciplinary healthcare applicants other than nurses and midwives is also taken over two years. Year One modules include: The Psychology and Sociology of Education; Theory and Practice of Clinical Health Sciences Education; Facilitating Learning in the Practice Environment; Curriculum Issues in Health Sciences Education. Year Two modules include: Theory and Practice of Research Methods for Healthcare, and a Dissertation.
