This course focuses on key areas in the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors. It will help prepare you for a future in these industries. You'll gain knowledge and skills that employers are looking for. This includes an in-depth understanding of molecular and cellular mechanisms of a range of diseases. This understanding can help develop better ways of diagnosing and treating disease.

You'll experience the latest technologies related to:

  • data analysis
  • cell imaging
  • protein and proteome analysis
  • cell culture and manipulation – including of stem cells

You'll have access to drug discovery and phenotypic screening technologies that are of industry standard. These are rarely found in an academic setting.

Following the taught component of this course, you'll undertake a research project. You will be working alongside University research staff at the forefront of their field.

Our lab spaces are set up to encourage collaboration and networking. In these spaces you’ll become part of a diverse and international scientific community.

You'll become an efficient problem solver and a successful project manager. You will developing skills that will prepare you for your future career in academia, industry, or a range of other exciting possibilities.

“I expanded my practical laboratory skills and in addition improved my problem solving and analytical thinking. Ultimately, the skills I developed and the wide range of experience I encountered during this time helped build my confidence as a research scientist and gave me the courage to progress to a full-time PhD”

Alison McFarlane, graduate

“There was no contest when choosing the University of Dundee. It has a fantastic reputation for life sciences across the globe and I believe it is very highly thought of, especially throughout Scotland and the rest of the UK. It has also been very exciting to watch my university take a front seat in the research and drug discovery being carried out globally to combat the coronavirus (Covid-19).”
