Why Study Spanish at CBU?

Be immersed in the language

Our program requires students to participate in immersion experiences. Students have the opportunity to attend local Spanish-speaking churches, literary conferences, Latin American restaurants and even travel abroad to Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries like Spain, Chile, Argentina and Peru. Faculty members mentor students academically and spiritually so that they grow in their knowledge of the Spanish language and build their relationship with Christ.

Employers prefer bilingual workers because they are capable of reaching more consumers. Our program ensures that students are prepared to use the language in such industries as health care, education, business, law enforcement, communication and social services. CBU offers degrees in most of these fields and students often double major with Spanish. The ability to speak Spanish also helps one travel to and share the gospel in more than 22 Spanish-speaking countries.

What You'll Learn

• Listening and reading: Graduates of the Spanish program will demonstrate listening and reading comprehension skills sufficient to understand any genre of literature or speech in the target language at a level equivalent to the advanced level according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.

• Proficiency in speaking and writing the Spanish language: Graduates will conduct oral demonstrations and prepare academic papers in the Spanish language at a level equivalent to the advanced level according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.

• Analysis of the Spanish language: Graduates will understand and analyze various components of Spanish linguistics including the grammatical, lexical and orthographic features needed to communicate effectively.

• Understanding of the target culture: Graduates will understand and examine Iberian and Latin American Culture in its diverse manifestations including history, geography, literature, music, art and social structures.

• Cultural competence: Graduates will demonstrate the ability to function within the target culture in a manner considered culturally appropriate.  

• Knowledge of literature: Graduates will understand and distinguish specific traits of literature in various Latin American nations and in Spain.

• Analysis of literature: Graduates will examine and analyze Iberian and Latin American literature using a variety of approaches.

SPA 233: Intermediate Conversational Spanish

The course will provide comprehensible input in a low anxiety environment in order to enhance second language acquisition. 

SPA 325: Spanish Grammar in Context and Composition

This course reviews elementary and intermediate level structures of Spanish and introduces advanced grammatical constructions. 

SPA 424: Latin American Literature II

This course studies major works in Latin American literature written from the nineteenth century to present times.
