 UNDERSTANDING THE FRENCH EDUCATION SYSTEM

Broadly speaking French higher education falls into two categories: the Grandes Écoles that offer highly advanced programs in engineering and management, which have a smaller student strength and the parallel system is the public University system, which has several departments in various fields and very large student numbers.

For French nationals, admission to the Grandes Écoles is highly selective and is based on competitive entrance exams. For international students, the admission process can vary from school to school. Given their stature and rigorous admission standards, these institutions are traditionally the training ground for the corporate, administrative, political and military elite in France. Their multidisciplinary approach and the quality of pedagogy train elite engineers and technology experts. While students from the Grandes Ecoles like ESIGELEC have the option to pursue higher academic learning, the exceptional training allows these graduates to enter desirable avenues of private and public employment immediately.

An effective teaching methodology, which involves wide range of activities and exercises will help you develop your spoken and written skills. These classes are delivered by a team of experienced teachers who are part of the ESIGELEC community.
International students at ESIGELEC, irrespective of the programme of study, can begin or continue to learn French with us.

For students pursuing an English taught programme or an exchange programme at ESIGELEC:
Every semester, you will be offered French language classes, which will help make your daily life in France easier. Moreover, for students coming for the English-taught Master’s programme, a working knowledge of French increases your chances of finding an internship in France.

For students pursuing a programme which is mainly French taught:
Our weekly French language classes will help you further improve your proficiency. You will also take an official French language test (TCF) that will reward your efforts and your progress in French. You must obtain the B2 level to be awarded the Diplome d’ingenieur degree from ESIGELEC. This certificate will also boost your CV.

For students interested in a programme that is mainly taught in French:
We offer linguistic and scientific adaptation courses, which involve intensive French language classes over one year or one semester, depending on your profile. You will improve your language skills, familiarise yourself with French culture and be initiated to science subjects in French. You will also discover teaching methodologies in French higher education and more specifically, methodologies used at ESIGELEC.
You will need a level B1 to gain admission to these language courses, at the end of which you will earn level B2, which is necessary to follow the engineering programme along with native French speakers.

Overview

The levels

A1 – designed for students who have no previous knowledge of French.
You will be exposed to all four language learning skills, i.e. Listen - Read – Write – Speak, at the basic level. You will be able to talk about yourself, your daily routine and about your immediate environment. At the end of this level, you will know whether or not you like learning languages! If you do, we encourage you to sign up for level A2 and enjoy French even more!

A2 – this is the pre-intermediate level, as in level A1, all four skills, Listen - Read – Write – Speak, will be developed. If you are comfortable with the language at this level, it would mean that you do have it in you, to study engineering at ESIGELEC!

B1 – at the end of this level, you will be an independent user! YAY! You will now have the language proficiency for our 5-year degree programmes, after your high school.

… and remember, if you are admitted to our degree programmes, the first three weeks will be dedicated to intensive French language classes, in France. You will soak in the actual setting, as you enjoy French culture and the French academic environment!

If academics is your thing

Each year, students make the choice of continuing their studies. The avenues are many:

Technical educattion:
Of the MSc (Master of Science) or MS (Specialized Master), labeled “Conférence des grandes écoles” or DNM, these training courses, of around one year provide a particular specialization depending on one’s professional objective (ex: MS Aéronautique Supaéro)
A Doctorate may also be carried out over three years. Thesis subjects are offered particularly within the IRSEEM School’s Laboratory. CIFRE agreements (Industrial Research Training Agreements) are offered by companies. After the Doctorate, researchers can continue in public or private sector research or join the R&D department of a company. The Doctorate is also an international benchmark diploma (PhD).
Note: ESIGELEC offers dual degrees with the University of Rouen Normandy or abroad, as part of the Engineering program.

Management education:
MS (Specialized Masters) labeled Conférence des Grandes Écoles, or DNM provide dual competencies. Come can be carried out on a work-study basis (alternatively). Students can also register as part of a business creation project (Ex: MS Central-Essec Entrepreneurs)
Note: ESIGELEC offers dual degrees with Audencia Nantes, Noema BS Rouen, IMT BS or abroad, as part of the Engineering Program.

For the entrepreneur in you

Here's what we organise to give you a peek into the journey of an entrepreneur, from concept to implementation:

• General talk on entrepreneurship

• Personalised mentoring

During the talk, students learn about new trends and opportunities, it is also an occasion where they are encouraged to share their own ideas.

The session aims to:
- nurture the entrepreneur in the students by giving them insights on “Where to begin” and “How to achieve success.
- provide academics and practitioners with a valuable platform for discussion to analyse major issues and challenges related to all aspects of entrepreneurship: Innovation, Family Business and Management.

The Graduates’ Network in companies

Based on the observation that many companies increasingly favour the graduates’ network to forge and develop School-Company Relations, the major objective is to create, develop and run a Graduates’ Network in partner and/or target companies: “the Tetes des Tribus”. The Network allows us to identify graduates in partner companies and stay in contact with the alumni. The Network of Graduates in Companies is nurtured by the mutual promotion of the company for the school and vice versa, its vocation is to be a catalyst of opportunities that has multiple missions:

For ESIGELEC:

-    Increase the visibility of ESIGELEC among companies both, in France and abroad.
-    Develop relations and exchanges between graduates in order for them to benefit from an efficient professional network
-    Offer a large number of services: support in job search, help with professional integration and advice on career management, etc.
-    Initiate new partnerships.
For the Company:
-    Increasing the brand awareness of the Company among our students, thus ensuring better visibility of its activities, professions and other missions.
-    Responding to the issues related to the recruitment of young talent.
-    Facilitating the integration of new-comers.

Jobs and careers Observatory

Missions:

Inform: provide qualitative and quantitative general information about careers and training.
Anticipate: increase awareness of the evolution of different careers, on the basis of data collected from various authentic resources (Young Graduates’ Survey through CGE, at 5 and 10 years after graduation)
Help manage human resources: provide guides and tools meant to develop competencies and training of employees of all branches.
Observe, list, analyze and restore professional data, statistics, forecast studies, on initial and continuous training to make them available to companies, students, graduates and institutions.
