Colorado School of Mines and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) are at the forefront of a massive shift in the way energy is sourced and consumed worldwide. The Advanced Energy Systems program is creating the next generation of thought leaders to capably and creatively guide this vital energy sector transition. Master’s and doctorate-level researchers will develop the skills and knowledge to address the full complexity of tomorrow’s infrastructure, economic and environmental challenges to support government, academia, nonprofits and private business.

Requirements and Costs

Master’s Non-Thesis

  • Bachelor’s degree: Required
  • GRE: Not Required
  • Letters of Recommendation: Required – two letters. Letters of recommendation are not required for current Mines students.
  • Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV): Required
  • Statement of Purpose: Required
  • Transcript(s): Required. Must be submitted for all schools attended (unofficial transcripts accepted for admissions review and must show successful completion of any required prerequisite course(s).
  • For international applicants or applicants whose native language is not English, please review the ENGLISH PROFICIENCY requirement tab 

Doctorate

  • Bachelor’s degree: Required
  • GRE: Optional for applicants who earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher in their undergraduate degree coursework. Not Required for Current Mines Applicants.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Required – three letters
  • Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV): Required
  • Statement of Purpose: Required
  • Transcript(s): Required. Must be submitted for all schools attended (unofficial transcripts accepted for admissions review and must show successful completion of any required prerequisite course(s).
