The Master of Nursing (MNurs) Programme provides opportunities for nurse graduates to prepare for advanced practice nursing in keeping with the rapid changes in health care in Hong Kong.

Part-time (6 semesters spread across 2 academic years) or

UGC Targeted TPg Fellowships Scheme
 
30 fellowships awarded for MNurs local students in 2023/24 and 2024/25 respectively. The fellowship students are required to pay a minimum tuition fee of HK$42,100, and the differences will be subsidised by the fellowships subject to a cap of HK$120,000 for each student.

Study Tracks
MNurs students are required to choose one of the study tracks, which are grouped under two concentrations:

Remarks:
  • Tracks are offered only if there is a viable number of students selecting that track, and subject to change without prior notice.

The curriculum consists of 2 core courses, 1 concentration course, 3 specialty courses, 3 elective courses related to advanced nursing practice and/or clinical components of the selected specialty.  In addition, a capstone experience, which includes a Translational Nursing Research course and a Dissertation or Clinical Research Project, develops students’ competencies in evidence-based practice and translating scientific evidence into clinical and public health innovations to improve quality of care.

The MNurs Programme offers a broad-spectrum of advanced specialties and benchmarking with the international standard adopted by top university nursing schools in order to align with the ever-increasing professional educational need for nursing specialisation locally and globally.  In addition, the MNurs Programme has been recognised by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong as one of the local clinical master programmes under the “Voluntary Scheme on Advanced and Specialised Nursing Practice”.

Remarks: Subject to the applicant's submission of qualification proofs issued by the awarding tertiary institution specifying the specialty area of the applicant's Master of Nursing degree.

BL Wong Memorial Prize in Nursing Studies (Master of Nursing)

One prize shall be awarded to a student who has attained the highest total aggregate of marks in the MNurs Programme upon satisfactory completion of the Programme.

Lau Wing Kai Memorial Prizes

One prize shall be awarded to a student who has demonstrated the best performance in the first year of studies in the Part-time MNurs Programme.

Scholarship for Master of Nursing (Full-time)

Up to five scholarships, each of the value up to the full tuition fee of the MNurs Programme, shall be awarded each year to non-local students from low-income or lower-middle income countries* on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Students may be invited to a selection interview if necessary.

Best Evidence Based Practice Dissertation/Clinical Research Project Award for Master of Nursing

One award shall be awarded to a student whose Dissertation/Clinical Research Project has been recommended as of the highest quality in the academic year according to the assessment criteria including the examiners’ comments and impact on nursing practices.

Conference Presentation and Publication Sponsorship

The Sponsorship shall be awarded to students who have presented in local/non-local conferences or published in journals with impact factors*

* List of journals with impact factors as defined in the “Incites Journal Citation Reports (https://jcr.clarivate.com)” for the latest year will be adopted.

To be eligible for admission to the curriculum leading to the degree of Master of Nursing, candidates shall:

  1. comply with the General Regulations;
  2. comply with the Regulations for Taught Postgraduate Curricula;
  3. be a Registered Nurse holding a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from this University, or from another university, or comparable institution accepted for this purpose; and
  4. satisfy the examiners in a qualifying examination if required.

For non-local candidates who have obtained a nurse license in their country will also be eligible for application of the Programme. Please refer to the “Admission & Enquiries” tab for requested supporting documents.

Application for admission fee (non-refundable): HK$300

Composition fee (Subject to change in each intake): Part-time: HK$60,000 per year / Full-time: HK$120,000 per year

The following documents should be submitted to the HKU School of Nursing as soon as you have completed the online application either by post i or in person:

  1. Originals or certified true copiesii of ALL academic transcripts and graduation certificatesiii, iv 
    (sample of declaration form in Hong Kong / sample of notary public in China);
  2. Certified true copiesii of HKID (for local applicants) / passport (for non-local applicants);
  3. Certified true copiesii of Certificate of Registration AND valid practising certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong or the nursing authority in your own country;
  4. Two academic referee’s reports. (Download from here);
  5. Originals or certified true copiesii of TOEFLvi / IELTSvi official score report (if applicable); and
  6. Other documents which you would like to bring the attention of the University.

 

Remarks

i  Please quote your application number and full name in all correspondence and supporting documents and ensure your mail items bear sufficient postage with return address.  

ii Please note that the University will only ACCEPT originals or copies of the documents that have been duly declared as true copies before a notary public. Copies of documents may be certified by the appropriate officials of your home institute if you are an overseas applicant.

No photocopies will be accepted.  Transcripts, diplomas, certificates and other relevant documents which are NOT in English should be accompanied by a formally certified translation in English. Certified translation may be provided by your home institution.

iii Bachelor degree should be conferred on or before August 31 (for local applicants) or March 31 (for non-local applicants) of the current admission year respectively.

iv For qualifications obtained from universities in Mainland China: An Online Verification Report of Higher Education Qualification Certificate (教育部学历证书电子注册备案表) in both Chinese and English version issued by the CHSI (学信网) / CHESICC (全国高等学校学生信息咨询与就业指导中心) is required. Please set the validity period of the reports as at least 6 months.

v Applicants can log into the TOLA applicant interface and view/edit invited referees. The applicant can review the invited referees by accessing the “Academic/professional referees” section.

vi Only TOEFL / IELTS scores recorded in the two years before the date of application are considered.
TOEFL applicants should request the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send an official score report to the University (TOEFL code 9671) direct.

vii Please note that all non-local students are required by law to obtain a student visa to study in Hong Kong and the Immigration Department normally issues student visas to students enrolling in a FULL-TIME programme in the University only.
