Programme description

International Relations and Public Diplomacy (IR-PUB) is Double Degree Programme conducted jointly by the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and the University of Siena. It is implemented within the framework and with financial support of the Katamaran program of the National Agency for Academic Exchange (from the Knowledge-Education-Development Operational Program: POWER). In line with the double-degree concept, students will complete a study program for two semesters at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and two semesters at the University of Siena in Italy, which has complementary competences in public and cultural diplomacy.

IR-PUB focuses on acquiring knowledge combining the issues of multi-level analysis of both international relations and state activities in the external sphere and adapting the possessed knowledge and skills, with particular emphasis on the importance of public diplomacy (political, economic, cultural), both at the level of global and regional institutions and state and non-governmental organizations.

The University of Siena in Italy

The University of Siena (Università degli Studi di Siena - UNISI) is one of the oldest universities in the world located in Italy, in the Tuscany region. It was founded in 1240 and is currently a place of education for about 20,000 students. It is worth to stress that The University of Siena is a major academic research centre. In its eight Centuries of history, the University of Siena has been producing a wide range of studies in many different fields of culture. New international collaboration agreements and projects established each year, increasing number of Degrees and courses delivered in English, holding good placement in National and International Rankings; these are some of the University of Siena’s strong points. Taking into consideration the Centre for World University Rankings (CEWUR) for the years 2018-2019, the University in Sienna was ranked 445 among the 1,000 best universities in the world.

Curriculum overview

In the programme curriculum, you may find information about the subjects you will attend while studying this programme. The programme indicates which subjects are scheduled for each semester of the studies, which are mandatory, which belong to the group of elective subjects (so-called optional subjects), which of them end with an exam, and which do not. Each subject in such a programme curriculum has its syllabus, which is a description of what students learn within the scope of that subject.

Student’s life

Studies are not all about education and participation in classes, they are also a great opportunity to develop your hobbies and interests. There are many research societies and student organizations working at the Jagiellonian University, including faculty-, and university-wide ones, which allow students to spend their free time actively, gain knowledge, develop their talents, participate in interesting, unconventional projects, go on research and team-building trips, participate in conferences and meet fellow students outside of the lecture halls. There are many student associations at the Faculty of International and Political Studies.

There are two student organizations at the Center for International Studies and Development that students can join:

• Student Association of International Affairs and Development (SAIAD) is a self-formed, self-governed, autonomous -University Student Organization- that aims to promote international cooperation between the Polish and international communities at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków with the rest of the world.
• The ISAD Panopticon is a student-run project, publishing a magazine featuring content created by students of the Jagiellonian University. It aims to inform the readers of knowledge relating to International Security and Development and related fields, such as political studies, philosophy, international studies, and media studies in an easily accessible way.

Transfer from other university or study programme

Transfer from another university, including a foreign one, or change of study programme within the University is possible with the dean's consent after completing the first year of studies and fulfilling additional requirements established by the Faculty Council. Graduates

The programme of International Relations and Public Diplomacy allows student to gain knowledge, competences and skills in the field of broadly understood: public diplomacy, international affairs, security issues, international economic relations and public international law. These effects correspond to the didactic concepts of the proposed obligatory subjects, in particular: Public Diplomacy, World Politics since 1945, International Economics, Global Comparative Politics and International Law and Human Rights. On the other hand, the selection of optional subjects determines the concept of teaching along with the student's own vision of development and interests. This means that the student can develop their skills and competences in the areas of broadly understood diplomacy, including economic, religious, cultural and new media diplomacy.

The MA programme offers a catalogue of optional courses that have been determined by geographical selection, which makes IR-PUB a field of study that provides knowledge about international relations in a comprehensive perspective through courses dedicated to Latin America, Africa, East Asia, Central and Eastern Europe and the functioning of international organizations in the modern world. Moreover, the program offers courses in the form of workshops aimed at acquiring analytical skills as well as teamwork and leadership skills: Foreign Policy Analysis and Leadership and Project Management. In addition, the program provides the development of language skills through the opportunity to participate in modern language courses and a specialist English course in diplomacy - Academic English. The implementation of the concept of the IR-PUB program is guaranteed by the creation of a consortium of international studies in partnership with the University of Siena, which guarantees constant cooperation with scientists and academics both on a European and global scale. In practice, this means that the student is obliged to complete the obligatory courses offered at both the Jagiellonian University and the University of Siena and the appropriate number of optional courses, which together will allow for the implementation of the necessary ECTS. The study program is closely related to the research conducted at the unit on security issues, international development, and the transformation of the international system determined by the global socio-political and economic phenomenon.
