TESOL Graduate Certificate (Online)

This certificate program prepares students with the requisite content knowledge and pedagogy to teach English to students or adults outside of the PK-12 public school system.

There are many opportunities for teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). This UM-Dearborn certificate program is specifically designed for individuals seeking opportunities locally or internationally and will prepare students with the requisite content knowledge and pedagogy to teach English to students or adults outside of the PK-12 public school system. Certificate holders may find careers with non-U.S. agencies/institutions in order to meet international needs to provide English instruction to their student populations.

This certificate does not lead to state teacher certification or a state endorsement. For those interested in PK-12 certification, please refer to the Post-Degree and Endorsement Programs page.

The TESOL Certificate Program requires 15 graduate credit hours. All of the courses will prepare certificate students with the requisite content knowledge, pedagogy and skills to teach non-native speakers of English.

Non-Resident Online Tuition Rate

Because this is a fully online program, students who are not classified as residents of Michigan are automatically eligible for the non-resident online tuition rate.  This rate is approximately 30% below the normal non-resident rate and results in a nearly $1,500 savings for each 3-credit class you take.  This only applies to the TESOL concentration because it is fully online.

Certificate goals

The TESOL Certificate Program goals are twofold:

  • Provide students with the requisite content knowledge and pedagogy to teach English to non-native speakers locally and abroad in short- and/or long-term English language programs.
  • Provide non-native English speakers who are currently teaching abroad with the requisite content knowledge and pedagogy to effectively teach their non-native English-speaking students.

Certificate completion

In order to receive your certificate, you need to complete a Certificate Completion Application.  The application should be submitted at the beginning of the term in which you expect to complete your certificate requirements.  Certificates are awarded three times a year and distributed by mail.  The Certificate Completion Application must be submitted on or before the last day of classes in order to be processed within the term in which it is submitted.  Students completing a certificate only are not allowed to participate in Commencement.
