Program Background & Development The membrane science and its technology development, in the past few decades, as increasingly emerged and plays an important role in many aspects of modern engineering of chemistry, energy, environmental conservation, Bioengineering, medicine, foods and electronics. Presently, an exceeding number of successfully developed applications can be seen in how the membrane has been adopted in desalination and water purification through ultrafiltration and osmosis percolation; the separation of oxygen from air for medical uses; hemodialysis found in artificial kidneys; the Separation of proteins and microorganisms; membrane filtration in the clean room of semiconductor fabrication, and the list goes on. And its future development Is regarded as infinite as many as countries have since infused substantial funds and manpower in dedicating to its research and Development. We have strong and widely-recognized graduate program in membrane science can be pursued. The membrane materials and applications graduate program offers a large selection of courses in various specialized membrane techniques.
Program Objectives In order to fulfill our mission as an excellent academic institute, the primary objectives are set as following categories to cultivate top-quality membrane engineers and scholars:
  • Prepare students for solid foundation of professionalism and lifelong, self-motivated learning capability to stand out in fast changing membrane technology.
  • Teach students vigorously to affiliate with indigenous practice and quest for authenticity in order to fortify multi-disciplinary cooperation and learning motivation.
  • Cultivation of solid integrity and working ethics and positive thinking toward future career and challenges.
Program Features The membrane materials and applications graduate program mainly supported by Department of Chemical Engineering and R&D center for membrane technology (CMT) at Chung Yuan Christian University. The Chemical Engineering Department has 16 faculty members engaged in graduate teaching and research, moreover, the members received many prominent awards such as, National Chair Professorship, Academic Award of Ministry of Education, Ta-You Wu Memorial Award, Outstanding Research Award of National Science Council, and Distinguished Teaching Award of CYCU. CMT consist of professor groups from chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, Biomedical engineering and Bioenvironmental engineering in CYCU, and supported contacts and exchange with interschool experts as technical consultancy. Each year the CMT gets more than 2million US dollar R&D fund form the National Science Council, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Economic Affairs and industry.
The master program is designed to offer the opportunity for the student to study membrane science as used in industry and academic research. The research topics of the program include: new membrane materials development and membrane surface modification; examination membrane formation mechanisms and formation criteria; membrane module design and development; development of green membrane process for energy and environmental applications; Biomedical membrane development. Membrane program has complete independent research space and equipment. The special research instrument includes slow positron beam spectroscopy, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, confocal laser scanning microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscope, Bio-AFM, scanning electronic microscope (SEM-EDX), surface plasma resonance, RF plasma system, plasma spray coating system.
Program Duration & Degree offered •Master’s programs must be completed within 1-3 years.
•Each master student must complete at least 24 credits of coursework plus 6 credits of master thesis.
