Biochemistry Degrees

Eckerd College offers two Bachelor of Science (B.S.) biochemistry programs, including one certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS). The main differences in the requirements for the two programs are as follows:

B.S., Uncertified Degree

5 core courses + 1 biology elective

B.S., Certified Degree

17 core courses + a chemistry research project

Major

Programs of study leading to B.S. and B.S. (ACS certified) degrees are available. The descriptions below summarize degree requirements.

B.S. Degree Biochemistry Program Courses:

The required chemistry courses are CH 121N, CH 122 (or 123), CH 212, CH 221, CH 222, CH 321, CH 326, CH 415, and CH 417. The required biology courses are BI 112N, BI 212, and one of the four, BI 308, BI 397, BI 412, or BI 422 for a total of three biology courses.

B.S. Degree (ACS certified) Biochemistry Program Courses:

CH 121N, CH 122, CH 212, CH 221, CH 222, CH 315, CH 321, CH 322, CH 326, CH 417, CH 424, and either CH 429 or CH 499. Also required are BI 112N and BI 212 for a total of two biology courses. The certification for this degree program is through the American Chemical Society.

All chemistry and biochemistry majors must enroll in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Capstone (CH 498) during the spring of their senior year. Moreover, all chemistry and biochemistry degrees require two semesters of college-level calculus (MA 131M and MA 132M) and two semesters of college-level physics (PH 241N and PH 242).

Additionally, students must satisfy the collegium requirement of 16 courses for any of the B.S. degrees. Finally, students must maintain a C average or better in courses within the chemistry discipline and the required supporting courses listed above.

For course descriptions, see Biology and Chemistry.
