Study the most pressing issues of our time

Take your pick of careers with a major in environmental studies

Everyone’s talking about the environment, from our rising oceans to the growing list of endangered species. The versatile Eckerd College Environmental Studies program takes advantage of our stunning natural setting in Florida to explore the challenges of and solutions to some of the most pressing issues of our time. Led by passionate professors, you’ll look at how politics, economics, science, history, ethics and philosophy influence the relationships between human behaviors and the natural world.

Outdoor classrooms

Report for class in the mangroves, freshwater marshes or palm hammock right on campus. Professors often make use of the many nearby keys, beaches, parks and wildlife areas to enhance student learning.

Early research

Why wait for grad school to get research experience? Here you can help faculty study seabirds, local fishing attitudes, ecovillages, climate change communication and air quality.

Careers of all types

Our Environmental Studies majors go on to varied careers in wildlife and parks management, environmental planning, urban design, environmental education, natural resource law, environmental journalism, public health, nature film and photography, environmental advocacy, environmental entrepreneurship, and public service.

In Their Own Words

“My classes and mentors genuinely helped to articulate my future goals and interests after Eckerd. Knowing many of my professors first-hand and getting their feedback made me a more efficient writer and reviser. Even if I was struggling to complete something, professors and mentors would encourage me to keep trying, while also allowing me the space to give up or make mistakes because we are all human. The ability [of my professors] to look at me and see not just another student but another person has always made me a proud Eckerd alum.”

Beyond the Classroom

Work with our liberal arts professors on research topics ranging from using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to manage beach-nesting birds, surveying and interviewing fishers to learn more about the risks and benefits of urban fishing, sampling air quality to explore environmental justice issues, conducting life cycle analyses to study the sustainability of different products, or analyzing the ways people understand scientific issues to improve communication from researchers to the public.

Recent internships have included:

You can also join Eckerd’s Planet Forward chapter to publish stories on sustainability issues related to climate change, energy, food, water, and more.

Our Environmental Studies Opportunity Database aids students in their search for internship, research, and job opportunities!

Study sustainable living in Costa Rica, ecotourism in the Caribbean, or environmental history in London.
