 Master in Finance

  APPLICATIONS

​​​The Master in Finance is designed for those who wish to acquire and deepen their knowledge and training in various domains of finance. Based on the most recent financial developments, this programme extends and enhances professional competences, combining the latest developments in finance theory with the analysis of complex real cases. Students are prepared to become highly qualified professionals in several areas of finance, such as valuation of real and financial assets, investments performance, financial institutions management, mergers & acquisitions, corporate governance, international finance, derivatives and risk management, volatility modeling and forecasting, and behavioral finance. The programme also creates incentives to a first approach to scientific research in these areas. All courses are fully taught in English.​​​

The Master in Finance is acknowledged by the CFA Institute as incorporating at least 70 percent of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK) and placing emphasis on the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct within the programme. This programme positions students well to obtain the Chartered Financial Analyst designation, which has become the most respected and recognised investment credential in the world.

The Master in Finance is among the best six Master's Degrees in Finance in Portugal, ranked at position 57 in Western Europe.

Dual Degree Programme in Finance with the Tor Vergata University of Rome

The Master in Finance is offered as a dual degree in partnership with the the Tor Vergata University of Rome, Italy. The dual degree programme allows students to complete one year of their studies at Tor Vergata, and be awarded an academic training equivalent to two master degrees – Master in Finance from the University of Minho and a Master in Finance & Banking from Tor Vergata (you can find more information here​).

Description


The Master in Finance is designed for those who wish to acquire and deepen their knowledge and training in Finance. Based on a solid theoretical finance background, this program extends and enhances professional competencies with a strong emphasis on ethics and social responsibility. The program combines the latest developments in finance theory with the analysis of complex real cases, providing students with an in-depth knowledge in investments and corporate finance, including firm valuation, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, portfolio management, international finance, financial derivatives and risk management, volatility forecasting, and behavioral finance. The background setup to study these problems has two main common factors: (i) the international environment and (ii) the emphasis on ethics and social responsibility of finance professionals. The program also prepares students for a first approach to scientific research in finance.

Key learning outcomes


1. Provide a broad and updated knowledge base and solid skills in the various fields of Finance necessary for the successful development of a career in finance.
2. Prepare students to use the main financial theoretical frameworks to solve real world problems in different areas such as corporate finance and investments;
3. Provide students with methodologies and research skills needed to successfully complete their dissertations/projects.
4. Promote team work and critical thinking and develop a culture that values ethics and social responsibility in financial decisions.
5. Promote the development of learning skills that enable students to learn throughout their experiences in a fundamentally self-directed or autonomous way.
6. Promote the development of skills to effectively communicate (both in oral and written forms) the results and reasoning of finance assignments to academic, professional, or general audiences.
7. Promote the development of core skills in IT tools to collect, model and analyze financial data from major financial databases.
8. Prepare students to respond to financial challenges in an international and competitive environment.

Access to higher education


The master in Finance provides students with the adequate background to pursue PhD studies.

Graduates from the Master in Finance are placed in a variety of national, international, and multinational organizations operating in the finance industry – e.g., major consulting companies, multinational corporations, banks, investment banks, financial advisors, financial markets regulators, insurance companies, etc.

Formal requirements


Profile of the candidate to this master programme should feature the following characteristics:
a) Holders of a bachelor degree or equivalent in the areas of Management, Economics, Sciences and Engineering and whose curriculum includes at least 20 ECTS in mathematics or quantitative methods;
b) Holders of a foreign higher education degree conferred after the completion of the first cycle of studies organised according to the principles of Bologna by an acceding State to this process;
c) Holders of a foreign higher education degree that is recognised according to the objectives after the completion of a bachelor degree by the Scientific Council of EEG;
d) holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that endows the candidate with the capacity to pursue this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council of EEG;
e) admission above the numerus clausus, of candidates who attended the curricular part of a previous edition of the course.
