Short description

The goal of this program is to provide general training in the field of economics at the bachelor level, with special emphasis on social, political, and international applications. Besides rigorous training in methodology, students will acquire a solid knowledge of the concepts, principles and theories of economics, and will be introduced to other social sciences and business studies as well.

The program is recommended to applicants who are interested in learning how choices and strategic decisions are made at different (individual, firm, and national) levels in the economy, what kind of social and political forces influence decision-making, and are not afraid of using models, and deductive reasoning to solve problems.

This program enables students to further their studies in several directions at the master’s level, including economics, business, sociology, and international relations, or to apply their broad-based knowledge in areas of government, business, politics, or media. The general character of the program offers graduates high flexibility in their future career decisions.

Strength of program

Being part of Hungary’s leading science university, the teaching and research environment of the program is excellent, and unique in the country. The social, political, and international orientation of the faculty offers the students of applied economics an open-minded and vivid milieu, where multidisciplinary thinking opens additional dimensions to ideas. Another strength of the program comes from the tradition of integrating social sciences when studying economic, political or social issues, and considering economics as part of a broad family of social sciences. Professors of the program are leading experts in their fields, and have extensive international network linkages. Our aim is to give our students an up-to-date knowledge of the field of economics as well as a special mindset which may help them succeed later in their career.

The structure is available on the website of the Faculty.
Career opportunities

The general and broad-based character of the program gives students high flexibility in their decisions what to do after graduation. One option is to continue their studies at master’s level. The Faculty of Social Sciences offers several English language programs including International Relations, Cultural Anthropology, Health Policy Planning and Financing, Community and Civil Development Studies, and Ethnic and Minority Policy. If someone wants to make a PhD it is also possible in the Faculty’s Doctoral School of Sociology. Another option is to jump right into the middle of hard work after graduation, in which case a BA diploma of Applied Economics provides them with an excellent entry ticket. Applied economists are always welcome in most areas of the government, public institutions, NGOs, business firms, in culture, sports, or the media.
