For entry: Applicants with professional qualifications and/or four years of full-time work experience will be considered on an individual basis.
How you will learn
Teaching
In a typical week, learning takes place through a combination of lectures and seminars. You'll be able to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller group sessions. Contact hours may fall between 9am and 9pm, depending on your elective courses and tutorials.
Class sizes
The typical student intake per year is up to 20. Lectures are normally attended by 25-30, and seminars/tutorials by 15-30, based on our 2018 intake. This varies by module, particularly if they are shared between degrees.
Independent learning
Outside of timetabled sessions, you'll need to dedicate time to self-study to prepare for coursework, presentations and exams. Our Stockwell Street library and online resources will support your further reading and research.
You can also join a range of student societies, including the Tourism Society.
Overall workload
Your overall workload consists of contact hours (lectures, seminars, etc), independent learning, and assessments. For full-time students, the workload should be roughly equivalent to a full-time job. For part-time students, this will reduce in proportion with the number of modules you are studying.
Assessment
Students will be assessed through:
- examinations
- a range of coursework
- dissertation or a consultancy project.
Feedback summary
We aim to provide feedback on assignments and to release examination results within 15 working days.

Whether you choose to live in halls of residence or rent privately, we can help you find what you're looking for. University accommodation is available from £126.35 per person per week (bills included), depending on your location and preferences. If you require more space or facilities, these options are available at a slightly higher cost.

- Resources: you may need to purchase books for your studies, as well as specific computer software (estimate, £150 per year). Our Stockwell Street library offers an extensive range of books for loan, as well as access to journals and digital resources.
- Memberships: applying for membership of a professional body may incur further costs. Details can be found on their websites.
- Field Trips: you may need to contribute towards any trips required for your course (estimate, £300).
Careers and placements
Will I have a work placement?
Students are offered an optional placement with a tourism or hospitality business as part of the Internship and Consultancy Project module. You arrange the placement in an organisation of your choice. The university's placement department and the programme team will assist you in finding suitable organisations for placement.
How long is my placement?
The duration of the placement will be four to six weeks.
What sort of careers do graduates pursue?
Careers in all aspects of the international tourism and hospitality industry are open to you, including leadership and managerial roles, business start-ups and consultancy.
Graduates go on to roles in major tourism and hospitality businesses, large hotel companies, government tourism agencies, major online and high street travel and tour agencies, international tourism organisations, tour operators, airlines, marketing, and cultural, heritage, festival and other specialist tourism operations.

Academic skills and study support
Access study skills support through your tutor, our subject librarians, and our online academic skills centre.
Where appropriate, we provide support in academic English and mathematics. If you need support to use particular IT packages for a specific module, we provide training for this.
Support from the department
Field visits to visitor attractions, tourism and hospitality businesses and tourist destinations will be organised as part of the modules from time to time.
The teaching team also organise regular guest lectures featuring tourism and hospitality industry leaders, such as:

- International Tourism Strategy consultants
- Marketing manager of Visit Britain.
As a Business School student you will be able to enter our Enterprise Challenge, which rewards student entrepreneurship and innovation. Previous winners have received significant prize money to develop their business ideas.
