Peter Graywacz

Mathematics, Certification in Secondary Education, '20

Just a few months after graduating, Peter Graywacz is realizing that dream as a ninth-grade algebra teacher at Classical Magnet School in Hartford, Connecticut. Although he never expected to begin his career during a pandemic, he says he was able to make that transition due to the opportunities he had for hands-on student teaching beginning in his first semester.

Graywacz says he knew he wanted to become a Mathematics teacher at an early age. He attributes his success to the Mathematics department faculty, including Professor Larissa Schroeder who is the director of the Mathematics Secondary Education Program.

Each experience gave me an opportunity to discover more about myself and how I would teach and prepared me by giving opportunities to practice teaching in the classroom.

The Mathematics Secondary Education program is superb. Students learn higher mathematics from excellent professors and are immediately placed in middle schools or high schools to gain valuable field experience. Dr. Schroeder has been an exceptional mentor throughout my four years, encouraging me to assist her in qualitative research as well as helping to write engaging lesson plans.
