Sport Management

About the Sport Management Major

The opportunities are endless! The Sports Management program prepares you to pursue a career in professional sports, intercollegiate athletics, facility operations, recreation management and many other sport-related businesses. You can also continue your education with Heidelberg’s Plus One MBA program to further prepare yourself to enter the professional world of sports. The career outlook in sports management is positive in the coming years, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projecting of over 1 million combined management jobs in the sports and entertainment sector between 2020 and 2030.

Below are the course requirements for the Sport Management Major:

An applied field of study devoted to the analysis, application, and evaluation of the unique aspects of the sport product and its relationship to the principles of management.

  • ESS 211: History of Sport and Fitness (recommended)
  • ESS 230: Introduction to Sport Management
  • ESS 303: Facility and Event Management
  • ESS 310: Athletic Administration: Sports Governance
  • ESS 315: Legal Aspects of Sport
  • ESS 316: Sport and Society
  • ESS 490: Senior Capstone Experience
  • MED 205: Media Writing or MED 351: Advertising and PR Campaigns
  • COM 245: Interpersonal Communication
  • COM 251: Persuasion
  • BUS 101: Introduction to Business Community
  • BUS 318: Business Law
  • ACC 190: Principles of Accounting
  • MGT 200: Principles of Management
  • MKT 200: Marketing

Designed to provide insights into the understanding of the sports profession and develop skills to lead and manage within the profession, whether the graduate chooses to enter the profession and pursue an advanced degree.

Designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in athletics coaching. The focus on leadership and development is designed to prepare students to coach at the youth or interscholastic level.

Local Partnership

Our partnership with the local YMCA offers students fitness courses led by YMCA instructors in Saurwein such as HipHop Abs, Muscle Blast, and Open Yoga. Only a two minute drive down the road, students have free access to the YMCA facilities with their student ID.
