Students will learn about the types and characteristics of special needs, assessment and intervention approaches, the broader environmental, language and social contexts, as well as issues related to social inclusion, empowerment, and quality of life of individuals with special needs. The Programme will provide opportunities for students to gain practical experience in real work environments. Graduates will work with families, schools, and communities to effectively facilitate inclusion and enhance the quality of life for individuals with special education needs.

Career Prospects/Professional Qualifications

The skills and perspectives students developed through the BA(SE) will be of particular value in careers related to social services, community development, and education-related business in government and non-governmental organisations. Possible positions may include:

  • Special Education Coordinator/Facilitator in NGOs, rehabilitation centres, sheltered workshops and training units, etc. to provide assessment and case management services, family support, and home care coordination to people with disabilities;
  • Project Officer, Liaison Officer or Community Support Officer in government and non-government agencies, charities, private enterprises, community groups etc., to work with community services and other professionals;
  • Executive Officer or Equal Opportunities Officer in government, non-government and private organizations to facilitate self-advocacy and/or negotiate on behalf of people with disabilities; and;

Location

This programme aims to provide a curriculum conforming to standards comparable to local and overseas universities, but also three interrelated concentrations that develop students’ intellectual capacity and ability to apply psychological knowledge and skills in the workplace.

The programme embraces two overarching goals and six subsidiary objectives for education and training. Upon graduating from the programme, students will be able to demonstrate a high level of competence in each of these areas.

To equip graduates with a solid background in psychological knowledge and research:

  • Demonstrate breadth and depth of knowledge in psychology;
  • Apply scientific methods to design and carry out psychological research;
  • Demonstrate critical and creative thinking in applying psychological principles to personal, social, and organizational issues locally as well as globally.

To produce graduates who can competently integrate the science and application of psychology:

  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with professionals and the public in providing information about psychological research and services;
  • Apply psychological knowledge and skills at pre-professional level in a variety of settings;
  • Demonstrate sensitivity and competence in applying ethical principles and standards to support the professional responsibilities and conduct in the workplace.

Career Prospects/Professional Qualifications

Graduates of BSocSc (Honours) in Psychology are eligible to apply for membership in the Hong Kong Psychological Society as well as international psychological associations. This programme thus helps to develop the University’s reputation as a provider of Education Plus programmes by offering a qualification which is professionally and internationally recognized.

Study content

It is desirable for psychology students to acquire more advanced knowledge of the field and the relevance of psychology to community needs, in addition to the general overview provided by Major Core courses. Therefore, the curriculum provides a concentration scheme so as to balance the breadth of content in core areas and research methods with opportunities for concentration in areas that are relevant to the needs of the community. Students may opt for one of the three areas of concentration. Each concentration involves a series of courses plus concentration-related Internship and Final Year Project. Through consultation with their Academic Advisor, students will be able to find the concentration that best matches their interests, training goals, and career aspirations. The three areas of concentration are:

The programme is designed to address the challenges of the educational transformation driven by the fourth industrial revolution and to meet the societal needs for qualified professionals in AI and educational technology.

The programme aims to:

  • provide students with fundamental knowledge and skills in artificial intelligence and educational technology;
  • develop students’ ability in applying knowledge of artificial intelligence and educational technology appropriate to teaching and learning;
  • build up students’ skills in using appropriate methods of artificial intelligence and educational technology to approach and solve real-world problems in educational contexts; and

Career Prospects/Professional Qualifications

This programme prepares graduates to be capable of taking up technical and support positions (e.g. computer programmer, data scientist, IT technician, software developer, e-learning resources designer, educational technology support, as well as teaching assistant in schools, publishing, community and social services, government and non-government organizations), with the possibility to progress further to senior positions like systems analyst and educational technology manager. Graduates can also pursue postgraduate study in the field of AI, education or information technology.

Environmental management is of growing importance in the daily operation of private and public sectors. Throughout the past few decades, new environmental tools have emerged to enable policymakers and decision-makers to deal with environmental challenges presented in their planning and operation, including environmental accounting, environmental risk assessment and environmental management system certification. At the same time, the establishment of environmental regulation in different jurisdictions makes it necessary for different sectors to comply with different legal and regulatory requirements.

Programme Aims

The Integrated Environmental Management (Honours) multidisciplinary programme at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) offers our next generation a multidisciplinary and comprehensive training encompassing science, computing, socioeconomic and regulatory dimensions, enabling graduates to deal with environmental issues from different perspectives.

The programme aims to provide students with a solid training in both scientific inquiry and social sciences inquiry so that they can understand the nature and complexity of the environmental challenges faced by the humanity. This also enables them to consider and tackle different environmental problems systematically using an evidence-based approach. Importantly, they will also be able to communicate their views and arguments on environmental issues to convince different stakeholders (including the general public and policy makers).
