Course Summary


****Full Accreditation from Engineers Ireland Chartered Engineer Status - the first online learning Masters programme to gain recognition***

This on-line part-time programme was developed in conjunction with industry partners Department of Transport, the Local Authority Services National Training Group (LASNTG) and subject matter experts, and is aimed at preparing engineering graduates including local authority engineers, consultants and contractors with the knowledge, skills and competences required for an accredited postgraduate award in road and transport engineering. 

The MEng consists of a part-time on-line blended learning three stage (year) programme, with Stage 1 consisting of Semester 1 and 2, where the theme is road maintenance engineering and network management. Stage 1 is equivalent to the L9 Postgraduate Certificate in Road Maintenance Engineering & Network Management

In Stage 2 (Semester 3 and 4), the focus is on road design and construction. Stage 1 and 2 are equivalent to the L9 Postgraduate Diploma in Road and Transport Engineering.

The learning is a mix of on-line lectures, on-campus workshops and project assignments.

Stage 3 of the programme encompasses a research dissertation, undertaken during Semester 5 and 6.

The overall award is a combination of the performance from all 3 stages.

Key Course Information

For Examinations, students may have to attend at the ATU campus through which they completed their studies. For some programmes it may be possible for the Exam to be taken remotely via online proctoring. ATU Students resident in the Republic of Ireland will be invited to attend exams at an exam centre located in Ireland. Students resident outside of Ireland or with exceptional circumstances may be eligible to attend remotely via online proctoring, where examinations are taken online and supervised virtually, subject to availability.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirement for Stage 1 of the programme is a second class honours BEng degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent.

Graduates of the Level 9 Certificate in Road Maintenance Engineering & Network Management can transfer to Stage 2 of this programme.

Graduates of the L9 Postgraduate Diploma in Road and Transport Engineering can transfer to Stage 3 of the programme and complete the research dissertation to achieve the award of MEng.

Career Opportunities

This award (PgDip MEng add-on) is aimed at providing graduates with the academic requirements of Engineers Ireland accreditation for the status of Chartered Engineer. This will facilitate professional engineers to progress to senior roles within the roads and transport engineering sector.

Engineers Ireland in 2021 approved this programme for full accreditation to Chartered Engineer level for graduates with an accredited Level 8 degree. 
This part-time online, blended programme is the first online Master's programme in Ireland to be accredited at the education standard required for the registration of Chartered Engineers. It was developed in partnership with the Department of Transport and the Local Authority Services National Training Group (LASNTG), targeting civil engineers working in the road and transport engineering sector.

If you apply and are approved for an online course at ATU Sligo, you will be required to pay a non-refundable deposit of €250 to secure your place. Your deposit will then be credited against the course fees once you are registered as a student. Students at ATU Sligo are also eligible to claim tax relief at the standard rate for tuition fees.

For approved local authority engineering applicants, this programme will be 80% funded by Dept. of Transport and 20% funded by local authorities.
