Description

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) is an innovative online program with full-time and part-time study options. The total number of credits required ranges from 40-46 depending on transcripts and previous course-related practice hours and includes 1,000 course-related practice hours post-B.S.N.

The D.N.P. program prepares students to lead healthcare innovation at the highest organizational level and influence policy while allowing students to focus on a particular specialty area. The D.N.P. nurse impacts the practice of nursing, the healthcare delivery system and the shaping of health policy by providing the environment, resources and knowledge needed to provide high quality patient and family-centered nursing care and to practice as a professional within an interprofessional team.

A key feature of the D.N.P. is its’ focus on evidence-based practice and evidence-based management practice, as emphasized by the Institute of Medicine. The D.N.P. is a practice-focused degree with an emphasis on the rigor of evidence-based practice based on research knowledge and the analysis of clinical and systems data. JMU D.N.P. graduates have a strong scientific foundation for practice and are prepared to translate knowledge quickly and effectively to benefit patients and healthcare systems.

D.N.P. graduates demonstrate the competencies in The Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Practice Nursing by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN, 2006).
