The Programme

The Master’s Programme in Engineering Mathematics is designed to equip students with the mathematical tools for developing tomorrow’s technology. You will have a broad and relevant knowledge of mathematical applications and methods that are useful both in private enterprise and in the academic world, among other areas. You will master mathematical methods with applications in statistics, information technology, computer science, energy and environmental engineering, robotics and automatic control engineering as well as optimisation.

The programme is carefully designed yet flexible, you can for example take a project course where you delve deeper into an interesting area. The programme will provide you with good theoretical knowledge and well-developed working methods in engineering. You will take courses in matrix theory, data analysis, numerical analysis, optimisation and algebra, all chosen to be applicable in modern engineering. Topics treated in courses in the programme include big data analysis, secure and reliable communication, Pagerank and mathematical modelling.

For your degree project you will have the opportunity to get in direct contact with development and research or to collaborate with a company.

Employment and Future Prospects

With your degree from the Master’s Programme in Engineering Mathematics, you will have many opportunities for a good career. In combination with the technological skills acquired from previous studies, you will have the expertise necessary to develop and create new technological solutions. The development of future technologies is dependent on and based on the use of mathematical methods and calculations.

On completion of the programme you can, for example, work with development or research in your own business or a Swedish or multinational company that uses mathematical or statistical methods, calculations and algorithms in its technological solutions. There will also be a good opportunity after completing the programme to continue as a doctoral student at Mälardalen University or at another university either in Sweden or abroad.

Specialists in engineering and mathematics are in high demand on the modern labour market, within many areas and companies, for example communication technology, information technology, internet and computers, robotics, banks and insurance companies, engineering and consulting firms, construction companies, medical companies and energy companies, as well as within the public sector when it comes to medicine, health care and education, among others.

Programme structure and content

If you study full-time, you study 30 higher education credits (hp) per semester. Courses can run at different paces and be of different lengths. As a program student, you have a guaranteed place for courses in your program and you study the courses in a specific order. Some courses within a program are mandatory and some are optional.
