Our retraining specialisations are structured according to the Subject Content Knowledge Requirements Policy of the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA).

Applicants living in New South Wales seeking to use the retraining specialisation to add an additional teaching qualification (in Mathematics or TESOL) to their portfolio must already hold an accredited teaching degree and must be registered as a teacher with NESA. For recognition in other states, territories and countries, graduates should contact the regulatory authority in the relevant jurisdiction to determine the specific requirements for recognition as a teacher in that area.

The University of Newcastle’s Master of Education prepares you with the skills and knowledge to build on your current teaching experience and further your career in education. You will graduate with an advanced understanding of the values and ethical principles that underlie the broad field of education and the conduct of various research traditions in complex settings in an ethical, collaborative, professional and accountable manner. You will enter the professional workforce with the ability to articulate an educational perspective in regards to the broader community issues of ethical conduct, equity and social justice. Graduates can embark on some of the following career pathways:

  • Education Consultant or Advisor within TAFEs, universities or schools

  2. Review the program fees and costs.
  3. Check whether your postgraduate program has a Semester or a Trimester closing date. Please view the application closing date.
  4. If you are from a non-English-speaking background, you need to satisfy the University's English language requirements and ensure that you can provide evidence of your English proficiency if required.

You will be considered for entry based on criteria such as your undergraduate studies and/or equivalent prior learning and/or relevant work experience.

The Master of Education is an 80-unit postgraduate qualification for:

  • qualified teachers who wish to gain an additional teaching area in Mathematics or TESOL; or
  • qualified teachers who wish to undertake professional development.

Admission is available for applicants who have one of the following qualifications or equivalent:

Teacher Retraining

  • Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Education/Teaching; or
  • Bachelor Honours Degree in Education/Teaching; or
  • Bachelor Degree in Education/Teaching.

Professional Development

  • Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Education/Teaching; or
  • Bachelor Honours Degree in Education/Teaching; or
  • Bachelor Degree in Education/Teaching.

Relevant fields include education, teaching, training, tutoring, or equivalent.

Related study or work experience can be credited as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and may reduce the number of units you are required to study. RPL will be assessed by the Program Convenor.
