Do you want to help secure global food safety?

With a Masters in Health Management in Aquaculture (AquaH), you’ll play an essential role in securing global food security. With a world population expected to exceed nine billion by 2050, it’s estimated that we’ll need a necessary 70% increase in food production, to provide enough food for all.

Aquaculture has been expected to play an important role in relieving the growing need for healthy, tasty and sustainably produced food.

The programme consists of an initial common semester that is carried out at Ghent University, then in the 2nd and 3rd semester you can choose between 3 learning paths that will deepen their knowledge on a specific aspect of the overarching programme theme.

For decades, the aquaculture sector is the fastest-growing food production system globally and aquaculture is the only option to reduce the pressure on levelling or declining wild fisheries. Since 2014, its contribution to the supply of food for human consumption has exceeded wild-caught fish.

Study Environment

You will have the opportunity to live in several exciting European cities. At NTNU, you’ll find the faculty centrally situated at Gløshaugen campus in the city of Trondheim. As a student enrolled in this programme, you will have access to state-of-the-art facilities, marine laboratories for culture of aquaculture species, computer labs, research laboratories and platforms (research vessels).

The programme offers 3 distinct learning lines, each addressing aquaculture health issues on a different level:
@ NTNU: relationship between the ecosystem and health
@ WU: preventing disease and maintaining adequate health, whilst minimising the impact on the environment
@ UAB/UB: the relationship between animal physiology and health

Multi-university degree

In order to respond to the need for an expert training in aquaculture health management, the AquaH consortium combines the expertise of the 4 European excellency centers in the field:

Ghent University (UGent – coordinator), Belgium

Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway

Wageningen University - Aquaculture & Fisheries Group (WU), Netherlands

Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB) and Universitat de Barcelona (UB), Spain

Each partner has a long standing and strong reputation in aquaculture research, with a growing focus on health and disease management.

Seek admission

This program is run on multiple European campuses and Gent University is the coordinator of the programme. It is crucial to ensure you meet all the requirements for a Health Management in Aquaculture before seeking admission. Please refer to information in main web page aquah.eu for more details.
