Master's in Curriculum and Instruction Online

The online Master's in Curriculum and Instruction is designed for teachers and educators who have already earned a bachelor’s degree and have a teaching license or certificate of instruction in any content area at any age/grade-band level (Infant-Adult).

Educators entering the C&I Master’s program at Ohio University are seeking opportunities to advance their knowledge, skills, and dispositions in instruction, curriculum design, and evaluation. Coursework and clinical experiences in your own classrooms or nontraditional educational settings will focus on innovations in teaching, student learning, curriculum development, pedagogy, assessment, mentoring, and community involvement culminating in a Master’s Action Research project that you will complete in your own classroom, school, educational setting, or community.

A jobs search on LinkedIn for “curriculum and Instruction” returned almost 26,000 results. The job titles included Curriculum Manager, Curriculum Specialist, Principal, Instructor, Consultant, Director of Instruction, Dean, Coach, Instructional Facilitator, Lead Teacher, and Provost. If any of these titles appeals to you, we can help you gain the knowledge and skills that will make you a strong candidate. And according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the need for new educators with the skills gained from completing this degree will remain very strong through at least 2030. 

Please note: While working on your M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction, you must also be gainfully employed as an educator in an educational setting during the Fall and Spring semesters in which you are taking courses. This includes educators teaching in non-traditional K-2 educational settings.  

Because this program is aligned with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), graduates will be prepared to sit for the NBPTS exam and submit at least one portfolio towards the NBPTS certification.

Program of Study

The program was designed to be completed in four semesters and an alternative sequence is available that allows Patton College of Education Teaching Fellows to complete the program in three semesters. However, as with any master's program, you have five years to finish. Also, you can begin the program in the Fall, Spring, or Summer terms.

Application Process

Prepare to include:

  1. A Brief Statement of your Qualifications and Professional Goals
    • Describe your personal and professional background, including teacher preparation, teaching field, and teaching experiences;
    • Describe your current and long-range professional goals.
    • Note: A separate writing sample is NOT required.
  2. A Copy of Your Current Resume or Curriculum Vita
     
  3. One letter of recommendation
     
  4. Official Transcripts
    • Contact the college or university where you received your bachelor’s degree to request 2 official transcripts to be sent to Ohio University Graduate College, graduate@ohio.edu.
    • Note: If you earned your bachelor’s degree at Ohio University, you do NOT need to request transcripts.
  5. Licensure 
    • You must hold a currently valid teaching license. Please indicate your currently valid license number on the application. If teaching in a non-traditional educational setting, a letter of reference from your supervisor and any certificates should be submitted in your application in lieu of a license number.

FAQs

How heavy is the course load and projects?

Since this program is designed for working teachers, we only offer two courses in the fall and spring semesters with research and project topics centered around your actual work in the classroom and school. Other courses are offered during our two summer sessions at which time most educators have a break from their busiest in-school schedules.

When does the program start and how long does it take to finish the program?

You can join the program in any term. However, if you want to finish in four semesters (the fastest completion), it is best to start in the first summer session which begins in May. Nevertheless, it is still possible to join in Fall or Spring and still finish well within two years. And it is possible to take a slower pace, if you so desire. We will be as flexible as is needed to keep you progressing toward your degree.

I have been accepted to The Patton College Teaching Fellows program. Can I complete a Curriculum and Instruction master’s in three semesters?

Yes! Teaching Fellows can follow an accelerated course of study to finish in three semesters. You would take three courses in summer semester, four courses in fall semester, and four courses in spring semester.

Are all of the classes online?

Yes, all of the classes are online and for the most part asynchronous. Some instructors may require online meetings, but these are planned well in advance and scheduled with the students.
