  • Admission requirements

    To apply for this programme you must have:

    • a bachelor’s degree in education in early childhood education, preschool, primary / elementary school, secondary school, higher education, pedagogy, or equivalent or
    • a bachelor’s degree in development studies or other relevant social science disciplines (human geography, sociology, social anthropology, political science, social economics, history and area studies that cover developing regions or other development-related areas)

    You must also have:

  • How to apply

    You apply via Søknadsweb, where you fill in your details and upload all the required documents.

    There are different application deadlines based on which country you apply from:

    • 1 November: for applicants from countries outside of the European Union / the European Economic Area (EEA) / Switzerland
    • 1 March: early admission for applicants from the European Union, the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland, and for non-EU/EEA citizens with a Norwegian national ID number residing in Norway
    • 15 April: ordinary admission for applicants from the European Union, the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland, and for non-EU/EEA citizens with a Norwegian national ID number residing in Norway
  • Programme cost

    For students from the EU/EEA/EFTA the only cost of this programme is the semester fee (student.oslomet.no) of approximately NOK 1,000, which you pay each semester of the programme. For these students there are no tuition fees.

    For students from countries outside the EU/EEA/EFTA there are tuition fees in addition to the semester fee (student.oslomet.no).

  • Programme content

    This degree gives you knowledge and insight into the fields of international development, education, and sustainabilities, with particular emphasis on the dynamics of social conditions in the Global South and North.

    It consists of five courses, some of which are common to all students and others that allow for specialisation and in-depth studies.

    This includes work on development programmes and projects focused on economic and social development and/or on education and/or on ecological sustainability, at multiple levels of scale (local, national, regional, international).

    Such work extends to policy analysts / policy makers and practitioners, working within the INGO sector or other agencies, with a particular focus on the Global South.

  • How the programme is taught

    This programme is organised as a two-year full-time study.

    You will have a variation of

    • lectures
    • seminars
    • presentations
    • supervision
    • discussions in large or small groups
    • writing essays/scholarly articles
    • writing your master’s theses

    All classes are taught in English and all coursework requirements and assessment tasks, including the written master’s thesis and oral examination, are to be completed in English.

  • Exchange

    In addition to the international academic environment throughout the programme, we encourage you to conduct fieldwork in the Global South, when feasible, and to include an explicit Global South dimension in your research.

    The fieldwork may also be combined with a study exchange stay at a university abroad, where appropriate.

  • Career

    This degree gives you the possibility to work within a number of different fields in the broad development, education, and sustainabilities fields.

    As a student, you will develop specific professional and general analytical and research competences that employers seek.

    With this degree, you are able to apply to relevant PhD programmes, among others the PhD programme in educational sciences at OsloMet.

    The programme provides the basis for work with:

    • Research, policy analysis, programme evaluation and implementation, including that related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
    • Development projects and programmes, including formal and informal education, training activities, skills development
    • Education, development, and sustainability in the Global South and in the NGO sector 
    • Relevant public and private organisations
