Admission requirements
When you apply for this degree, you choose one specialisation.
To apply for all the specialisations you need:
- a bachelor’s degree in engineering including: 25 ECTS in mathematics, 7,5 ECTS in physics, solid mechanics, building physics and/or thermodynamics and 5 ECTS in statistics
- an average grade of at least C (according to the ECTS grading scale) on your bachelor's degree
- proof of your English proficiency
The specialisations have different requirements.
- To apply for Building Technology you must have a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering or energy and environment in buildings.
- To apply for Geotechnical engineering you must have a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, marine engineering or equivalent engineering discipline.
- To apply for Smart Water Process and Infrastructure Engineering you must have a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or marine engineering.
- To apply for Structural Engineering you must have a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering or marine engineering, and 20 credits in mechanics, statics or other courses in the field of structural engineering.
- To apply for Transport Infrastructure Engineering you must have a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering or marine engineering.

Programme cost
For students from the EU/EEA/EFTA the only cost of this programme is the semester fee (student.oslomet.no) of approximately NOK 1,000, which you pay each semester of the programme. For these students there are no tuition fees.

Computer system requirements
- In this study programme, you use a lot of software that only runs on the Windows operating system. We strongly recommend that you get a PC laptop, not a Mac.
- A laptop is required for 3D modeling already in the first semester, and then we recommend a "gaming laptop" that has powerful video cards that can be used for modelling. The GPU should be at least Nvidia RTX 2060, or Radeon RX5700, but as often you get gaming laptops with better graphics cards than that.
- The laptop should have 16 GB of memory or better. The processor should be Core-i5 with several cores or equivalent, preferably better. The hard disk should be 500GB or more, we recommend SSD.
- If you want to use Windows on a Mac, it requires very strong performance on the Mac, and it often costs a disproportionate amount, and often does not work very well.

Building Technology
Building Technology concerns the analysis, calculation and design of the body of the building, including facades and building envelopes to ensure climate adaptation and nearly zero emission buildings from a life cycle perspective.
Climate changes brings increased temperature, more rainfall and extreme weather. This exposes buildings and other structures, such as bridges, offshore structures etc. to greater and more unpredictable climate-driven stresses.
At the same time, society and authorities are increasingly demanding environmentally friendly and sustainable design of the built environment.
This is supposed to tackle climate change, mitigate urban heat island effect in big cities and eventually contribute to decarbonization of the building industry.
In the master’s degree programme, you will acquire advanced knowledge about the applied engineering physics in the built environment, sustainable building design and life cycle assessment of building and structures.

Geotechnical Engineering
Geotechnical Engineering concerns engineering of earth materials such as soils and rocks to find solutions for various problems, typically linked with hydrological, geological, and geophysical engineering.
Geotechnical Engineering is not only applicable to civil engineering, but also to mining engineering, petroleum engineering, and offshore structures and foundations.
Compared with other civil engineering directions, the tasks of a geotechnical engineer comprise more site-based field investigation and laboratory testing to classify relevant properties of geomaterials with large variations to engineering design.
This specialization provides students with abilities to handle tasks through all phases of geotechnical designs; from site investigation and soil testing, to proposed engineering solutions, and design validation at the end, based on solid theoretical knowledge.

Smart Water Process and Infrastructure Engineering
Smart water process and infrastructure engineering concerns the analysis, design and management of urban water resource processes and infrastructure.
Water is an essential resource with strong links to energy and food production, and urban water systems represent one of the largest water pollutant sources globally.
Implementing state-of-the-art and innovative technology rather than conventional resource intensive ones is a key to adapt in the future.
The development towards an integrated connection of urban infrastructure, with data collection, decision support and process control creates a need for professionals in the field of smart water process and infrastructure.

Structural Engineering
Structural Engineering is about the analysis, calculation and design of load-bearing structures and structural systems. This is done in order to understand and calculate the stability, strength and rigidity of built structures.
Structural Engineering theory is based upon applied physical laws and empirical knowledge of the structural performance of different materials and geometries.
The study programme focuses on providing you with solid, theoretical knowledge and applied skills in linear and non-linear FEM analysis, design of structures and structural systems, and service life extension of structures.

Transport Infrastructure Engineering
Transport Infrastructure Engineering concerns the analysis, calculation, design and management of transport infrastructure systems.
Roadways and railways are typical transport infrastructure systems. They must be well designed and managed to provide safe and resilient support to traffic that is ever-changing with the advancement in the transport technology.
In addition, the increase in societal demand for multi-modal future-oriented transportation forms, must also be taken into account
Besides, existing transport infrastructure systems also need to be taken care of to ensure safe functionality.

This master’s degree programme is designed to meet the National Council for Technological Education’s (UHR-NRT) conditions for use of the additional Norwegian designation “sivilingeniør” (siv.ing.) on diplomas for master’s degree programmes in technology.
