Mechanical Engineering

The BSc (Eng) Mechanical Engineering course is a stage 3 only course. The course is divided into two sections (stage 3a and stage 3b) and delivered over two years, each stage normally taking two years to complete. 

Stage 3a (odd year entry)

Term 1

No module choices, take two core modules (C):

• Environmental Engineering 1 (C)
• Project Management, Teamworking and Leadership (C)

Term 2

Take two modules - one core module, plus one elective module (E) at either stage 3a (OR stage 3b) - or if entering the second year of study one core module plus EN3602:

• Industrial Plant (C)
• Offshore Engineering or EN3602 Integrative Engineering Project (E)
• Integrative Engineering Project (second year of study only) 

Stage 3b (even year entry)

Term 1

Take one core module plus one elective module:

• Signal Acquisition, Instrumentation and Control (C)
• Energy Conversion and Storage (E)
• Mathematics 3 (E)

Term 2

Take two modules - one core module plus one elective module at either stage 3b (or stage 3a) - or if entering the second year of study one core module plus EN3602:

• Engineering Analysis 1 (C)
• Renewable Energy Systems (E)
• Integrative Engineering Project (second year of study only)

Learning Methods

You will undertake a total of 8 modules (two modules per semester, four modules per academic year). Classes will normally be timetabled for two evenings per week from 18:00 until 21:00 and these classes will comprise of lectures and tutorials delivered online; either via live sessions or pre-recorded lectures and slides uploaded to CampusMoodle. Lecturers will be available for Q&As during the online timetabled slots. Drop-in evening classes for each module will be on campus (approximately 4 times per module). A third evening may occasionally be used for on campus laboratory sessions. Exams will be held on campus whilst coursework will be offered online. The project work consists of an individual project (often employment based). By prior arrangement with the School, you may undertake some modules or parts of modules with the daytime classes. Examinations are normally scheduled during the daytime.

How long is a BSc (Eng) Mechanical Engineering course?

A Mechanical Engineering degree can be completed successfully in 2 years, in which the opportunity to receive the necessary skills are obtained.

Staff delivering this course

Academic staff are experienced engineers, many with Chartered status and industry links, who have achieved or are working towards Higher Education Academy Fellowship – a professional recognition of their practice, impact and leadership in teaching and learning. Many are research-active and some feature in the annual STAR awards (Support and Teaching staff with Appreciation and Recognition) voted for by students.

Assessment

• 6 written exams, typically 2.5-3 hours per exam
• 5 reports such as written coursework
• 1 dissertation
• 1 portfolio
• 1 oral assessment
• 1 group critique

Independent Study

A total of 150 hours per 15-credit module is recommended to get the most out of your course. This includes time studying outside the timetabled classes. It could include, for example, reading lecture notes, reviewing lecture-captured videos, undertaking tutorial problems, writing up lab reports or other coursework, and practising specialist software skills.

You will be provided with 24/7 online access to your learning material and resources, along with the ability to interact with your class members and tutors for discussion and support.

What is needed for a BSc (Eng) Mechanical Engineering degree?

• For stage 3 you should have an appropriate HND (or equivalent). Direct entry to Stage 3 is normally guaranteed for students with an HND in Mechanical Engineering from North East Scotland College (NESCol).
