The graduate program in chemistry provides a variety of options designed to meet students’ academic, professional and personal interests.

Complete your Master of Science in Chemistry degree in as little as two years as a full time student, or study at your own pace with our part time option. Courses are offered primarily on weekday evenings so students can continue to work while advancing their knowledge in the field.

Dual Degree Program

Students apply to the Bachelor’s-Master of Science in Chemistry 4+1 Dual Degree Program as an incoming freshman and are admitted directly into the graduate program at the same time as your admission as an undergraduate student. Students are encouraged to reach out to your admissions counselor to discuss dual degree options.

Upcoming Events

Choose a Track

Chemistry: Thesis Track

Gain experience in modern experimental techniques and deepen your understanding of laboratory operations and computational computer modeling. Under the supervision of a faculty member, you will craft a proposal for your thesis project, which typically includes approximately six months of research that culminates in a written thesis.

Chemistry: Non-Thesis Track

This track is ideal for students with relevant industry experience and whose employment or other circumstances preclude them from doing a master’s thesis. Students will strengthen their knowledge in the basic areas of chemistry - inorganic, organic, physical, analytical, and biochemistry. You will learn to effectively communicate scientific information, both written and orally, and you will improve your ability to understand and apply scientific literature in scientific settings.

Chem-Bioinformatics: Non-Thesis Track

In the Chem-Bioinformatics program, you’ll become part of a research community that has wide-reaching implications for important fields including medicine, drug discovery, genomics, evolutionary biology, and more. Students will learn how to create databases, algorithms and other computational and statistical techniques to solve formal and practical problems and analyze relationships arising from massive chemical and biological data sets.

Molecular Biochemistry: Thesis Track

At SHU, you’ll gain experience in modern experimental techniques, explore state-of-the-art bioanalytical methods and deepen your understanding of laboratory operations and computational computer modeling. You’ll work under the close supervision of a faculty advisor to complete a thesis project.

Molecular Biochemistry: Non-Thesis Track

Students will learn the chemistry of biomolecules and explore state-of-the-art bioanalytical methods.

STEM Designated Program

This is a STEM-designated program, which means you will be trained in areas of science that are in high demand with U.S. employers. This program allows international students with F1 visas to extend their OPT in the U.S. by 24 months after graduating (36 months in total).
