Course details

All about the course

This programme consists of nine 15-credit core modules, including the Research Methods for Managers module, which will prepare you for the final elective module. For this final module, you'll choose from the dissertation, internship, entrepreneurial development project, consultancy project or work placement.

Principles of Business AI

This module delves into definition and concepts of AI and business strategy, equipping you with a comprehensive understanding of AI in the corporate landscape. You will explore fundamental AI principles, machine learning and their strategic implementation in diverse business domains. The module provides risk management and the societal impact of AI adoption in future business. You will engage in case studies and critical analyses to develop a nuanced perspective on leveraging AI for competitive advantage.

The course bridges the gap between technological innovation and effective business decision-making, fostering a holistic approach to integrating AI into contemporary organisational frameworks. 

AI Governance and Sustainability

This module offers a comprehensive exploration of the intersection between AI sustainability, encompassing three fundamental areas: economic, social, and environmental sustainability aligned with the United Nations' seventeen sustainability goals. Probing into legal implications, the course addresses governance frameworks for responsible AI deployment. Ethical considerations take centre stage, navigating the landscape of AI ethics and professional development.

You will examine general challenges posed by AI, highlighting ethical dilemmas and limitations inherent in AI systems compared to human counterparts. This module will equip you with the knowledge to navigate the complex terrain of AI governance while ensuring alignment with sustainable and ethical principles. 

AI Prompt Engineering for Business

This module focuses on the practical aspects of crafting effective prompts for AI systems. Exploring the principles of Prompt Engineering (PE), the module elucidates the 'how-to' of formulating prompts to optimise AI performance. 

You will delve into the benefits and concerns associated with PE, gaining insights into its strategic application. The module tailors its approach for diverse business scenarios, offering a delicate understanding of how PE can be customised to enhance decision-making, problem-solving, and overall efficiency across various industry contexts. You will emerge equipped with the skills to harness the power of AI through precise and effective prompt engineering in business applications. 

AI in the Workplace

This module explores the transformative influence of AI on organisations, emphasising effective change management in key business areas such as HR, leadership, workspace dynamics, and workforce integration. You will gain insights into harnessing AI for collaborative human-machine synergy, recognising that successful implementation requires understanding of the evolving roles of both.

The module navigates the strategic implications of AI adoption, enabling you to facilitate a seamless coexistence of humans and machines in the future workplace. Through practical scenarios, it cultivates an appreciation for the pivotal role AI plays in shaping the future of work while emphasising the importance of adaptability and leadership in this dynamic landscape. 

Business Application and AI Tools

This module offers a comprehensive review of cutting-edge AI tools and technologies, unravelling their strategic impact on organisational processes. You will delve into the intricacies of integrating AI tools, with a focus on understanding and maximising return on investment (ROI) for businesses.

The course navigates practical applications across diverse sectors, empowering you to select and implement AI tools judiciously. From machine learning algorithms to automation frameworks, the module will equip you with the knowledge and skills to navigate the evolving landscape of business applications, fostering informed decision-making and proficiency in leveraging AI tools for organisational success. 

Responsible Technology

This module will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the contemporary landscape of technology ethics, including AI and information ethics, and includes issues such as regulatory and governance frameworks, sustainability, privacy and equality. 

AI in Practice

This module invites AI practitioners as guest speakers to provide real-world insights. Focused on human-centric ethical AI, the module explores the profound impact of AI on individuals, society, and organisations. It delves into the evolving ethical landscape, emphasising how our values shape AI applications and influence societal change.

You will engage in critical discussions, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the responsible use of AI in business field. The module not only imparts practical knowledge from industry experts but also cultivates a deep awareness of the ethical considerations that underpin the transformative role AI plays in shaping the human experience and organisational dynamics. 

Cyber Security & Information Management

This module provides a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices essential for ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information assets within organisations. You will explore various aspects of information and cyber security. The module content is mapped against the British Computer Society Information Security certificate to prepare you to undertake the certification if wanted.  

Research Methods for Managers

An applied module that focuses on practical research methodologies and techniques for conducting research within the workplace and prepares you for your final elective module. 

Elective modules

Business Dissertation

You will select a particular topic you are interested in for further in-depth study.   

Business Internship

A 3-month experiential opportunity within an organisation, focusing on real-world project management issues.  

Entrepreneurial Development Project

An experiential learning opportunity where you will conduct market and business environment research to identify a business idea or venture and develop a business plan.  

Business Consultancy Project

An experiential opportunity where you will work with clients to solve live business problems.   

Work Placement

A full time placement of up to 12 months in a project management related role within a workplace (subject to availability and visa compliance). 

You will choose one of the elective module as the final 45 credits of your degree.

Please note that it may not be possible to deliver the full list of options every year as this will depend on factors such as how many students choose a particular option. Exact modules may also vary in order to keep content current. When accepting your offer of a place to study on this programme, you should be aware that not all optional modules will be running each year. Your tutor will be able to advise you as to the available options on or before the start of the programme. Whilst the University tries to ensure that you are able to undertake your preferred options, it cannot guarantee this.

What will I be doing?

TEACHING

An underlying principle of the learning and teaching strategy is to develop students as reflective practitioners and encourage engagement with continuous professional development. Teaching activities will range from, interactive lecture sessions, business simulations, timed tasks, student co-created activities, discussions, practical technology practical sessions, to student-led discussions, where you will be able to apply academic ideas and work with data, tools and techniques, supported by subject experts.

Our campuses are easily accessible, with Salford Crescent train station at the centre of our Peel Park campus. Programme Leader

Dr Marie Griffiths

Dr Marie Griffiths is the Business School’s Director of Post Graduate Research (PGR) and Programme Leader for digital-focused modules at UG and PG levels. As a key member of the Women in Tech sub cluster of the Research Cluster for Disruptive Technology at Salford Business School, she ensures that internationally recognised research informs the teaching on this programme. Marie is also the former President of the UKAIS (UK Academy of Information Systems) and a Digital Trustee at Emmaus Salford

Her research focuses on how emerging technologies impact work, communication, play, and learning. She is particularly interested in issues of privacy, digital identities, and data accumulation. Marie has a successful track record of working with SMEs on digital transformation and has co-authored a book titled ‘Strategic Digital Transformation: a results driven approach’. Additionally, she has been part of the academic team on ten Knowledge Transfer Partnerships

What you need to know

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

International applicants will be required to show a proficiency in English. An IELTS score of 6.0 (with no element below 5.5) is proof of this. If you need to improve your written and spoken English, you might be interested in our English language courses.

Undergraduate degree

Normally a minimum 2:2 honours degree or equivalent. A wide range of professional qualifications are also accepted, either in partial or complete fulfilment of entry requirements.

Alternative entry requirements

Accreditation Of Prior Learning (APL)

We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully.

The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course.

Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).
