Music

The Music Program, part of the School of Visual and Performing Arts, is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music. ULM offers the Master of Music Education degree, and the Bachelor of Music degree with concentrations in performance, theory and composition, piano pedagogy, and music education. Bachelor of Music degrees in music education lead to teaching certification in instrumental or vocal music.

The Music Program is housed in the recently-renovated and state-of-the-art Biedenharn Hall. This building houses ample classroom, studio, and practice facilities in addition to the new 284-seat Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall, which boasts two 9’2’’ Fazioli concert grand pianos. Adjacent to Biedenharn Hall is the ULM Band Building, which contains an 8,000 square foot main rehearsal hall, an extensive band library, practice rooms, and percussion studio and rehearsal space.

What sets us apart?

National Association of Schools of Music accreditation

Founded in 1924, the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) is an organization of schools, conservatories, colleges, and universities with approximately 639 accredited institutional members. It establishes national standards for undergraduate and graduate degrees and other credentials for music and music-related disciplines, and provides assistance to institutions and individuals engaged in artistic, scholarly, educational, and other music-related endeavors.

Master of Music Education degree

The focus of the Master of Music Education degree is to develop master music teachers and professional leaders for music in an on-campus, summer-only program.

The degree has two concentrations available: Choral General Music and Instrumental.  Each concentration consists of 36 credit hours and course rotations are designed to allow a student to complete the program in three summer sessions.

A valid teaching credential is required for admission into the program in addition to all admission requirements of the Graduate School at ULM

New 284-seat Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall

Ensembles

Ensembles include the Sound of Today marching band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, and the Technical Fowls basketball pep band. Additional instrumental ensembles within the Music Program include brass quintet, horn ensemble, flute choir, trombone ensemble, trumpet ensemble, bassoon ensemble, tuba and euphonium ensemble, percussion ensemble, steel drum ensemble, and African drum ensemble.

 

Ensembles also include the University Chorale, that sings a variety of choral music and performs concerts; the Concert Choir, an auditioned choir performing a variety of literature both sacred and secular; the Chamber Singers, a select group of 20-24 voices performing accompanied and a capella music.

Talent grants are awarded for participation in ULM instrumental and vocal ensembles.

Talons for TAPS

Talons for TAPS is an initiative to serve those who have served us, the community, and the country. Talons for TAPS mission is to send members of the University of Louisiana at Monroe trumpet studio to perform TAPS live for our service member’s memorial/burial services. We do this at no cost to the families of the deceased service member.

Music Careers 

There are many options open to you as a music graduate and you can choose to work in a range of professions inside and outside of music. Having a portfolio career is quite common if you follow a music career and you may end up working on both a freelance and contract basis. For example, you could combine teaching with freelance performance work, as well as doing contract/session work on particular projects.

American Choral Directors Association

Founded in 1959, the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) is a nonprofit music-education organization whose expressed purposes outline the associations dedication to the advancement of choral music. The mission of ACDA is to inspire excellence in choral music through education, performance, composition, and advocacy.


Kappa Kappa Psi

Kappa Kappa Psi operates primarily as a student service and leadership recognition society whose chief aim is to assist the Director of Bands in developing the leadership and enthusiasm that is required of his/her band.


NafME

The music program is proud to announce the formation of the University of Louisiana at Monroe Collegiate chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME)

NAfME is the only professional music association that addresses all aspects of music education.  More than 68,000 active, retired, and collegiate members represent all teaching levels from kindergarten through college.  Through its many programs, initiatives, and resources, NAfME works to promote the importance of music education, foster the best possible school music programs across the nation, and advance music education as a profession.

By joining the ULM Collegiate chapter of NAfME, undergraduate music education students gain professional credibility, gain insight into the professional world of music teaching, expand their network of professional contacts, gain access to job opportunities, discover new teaching methods and techniques, and develop leadership skills.

Talons for TAPS

Talons for TAPS is an initiative to serve those in our community who have served us, the community, and the country. Talons for TAPS mission is to send members of the University of Louisiana at Monroe trumpet studio to perform TAPS live for our service member’s memorial/burial services. We do this at no cost to the families of the deceased service member.

In addition to our mission to serve the community, we seek to enrich the experience of the students by bringing current and former military trumpeters to share their expertise and experience. By doing this, we are able to fully impress upon our students the importance of TAPS, it’s history, and why we honor those who have served our country.
