Information for International applicants

Applicants must be in possession of:

Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications

  1. the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) with Second Class or better in the same or in a closely related area of study as the area of study applied for,provided that the Board may consider applicants in possession of the Degree with Third Class Honours only if it is satisfied that such applicants are in possession of other qualifications, including relevant experience, obtained following the first cycle degree or/li>
  2. the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the same or in a closely related area of study as that applied for, with an average mark of not less than 55% in that area or
  3. a degree from this or from another university which the Board considers as comparable to any of the degrees indicated in paragraphs (a) and (b) above. This comparability may, in exceptional cases, extend to applicants proposing a research topic which in itself bridges the area of study of the first degree and the one being applied for. In such cases, applicants would be required to attend an interview to assess their suitability, in accordance with procedures established by the Board.

Applicants who are not in possession of an undergraduate degree in English or in a closely related area, but who hold a DELTA (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults) or Dip.TESOL (Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) qualification, may be eligible to follow this Course.

Supplementary and Preparatory Programme

  1. the Board may require applicants admitted under paragraphs (b) and if necessary (c) to follow and pass supplementary study-units and/li>
  2. applicants in possession of a degree with Third Class Honours or Category III shall be required to complete a preparatory programme.

The Master of Arts in English is a mainly taught postgraduate programme that will help you bring together the theoretical and practical aspects of the English language, especially and generally in applied contexts related to the Maltese linguistics environment. If you're interested in exploring English language use in a variety of genres and local contexts, this M.A. will guide to address the current demands in the workplace for enhanced English language use. It will train you to see the lacunas in the Maltese linguistic landscape and to address them using the current global language. By guiding you in the best possible ways to collect data, you will be appositely prepared to write extensively about the English language in the current climate.

In addition to the compulsory study-units, students are required to choose study-units to the value of 10 ECTS credits from the elective study-units on offer during the year. The total number of taught study-units should as much as possible be spread evenly throughout the year.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the degree of Master of Arts - M.A. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Arts.

In addition to the total number of credits for the programme (90 ECTS credits), students may apply to the Board to register for the extra study-unit listed hereunder. Extra study-units cannot substitute compulsory, elective or optional study-units that form part of the official Senate-approved programme of studies, and do not count towards the Year Average Mark or towards the Final Weighted Average Mark. ENG5119 Creative Writing: Postgraduate Tutorials and Mentoring 5 ECTS

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Communicate flexibly and incisively in English in professional settings.
  • Develop a keen sense of self-evaluation in your knowledge and use of the English language.
  • Create and redesign approaches to describing, analysing and teaching language in different contexts.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to different expectations and requirements about language policy.
  • Conduct large scale, scientifically representative language surveys.
  • Development of professional writing skills in the discipline.

As a holder of the MA in English (English Language), you will be able to enter a career as a teacher, writer, copywriter, editor, publisher, public relations, librarian, social service and proof reader.
