Information for International applicants

Applicants must be in possession of:

Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications

  1. the degree of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) with Second Class or better in the same or in a closely related area of study as the area of study applied for,provided that the Board may consider applicants in possession of the Degree with Third Class Honours only if it is satisfied that such applicants are in possession of other qualifications, including relevant experience, obtained following the first cycle degree or/li>
  2. the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the same or in a closely related area of study as that applied for, with an average mark of not less than 55% in that area or
  3. a degree from this or from another university which the Board considers as comparable to any of the degrees indicated in paragraphs (a) and (b) above. This comparability may, in exceptional cases, extend to applicants proposing a research topic which in itself bridges the area of study of the first degree and the one being applied for. In such cases, applicants would be required to attend an interview to assess their suitability, in accordance with procedures established by the Board.

Applicants shall be asked to provide evidence of their professional experience in Fine Arts by means of a portfolio.

Supplementary and Preparatory Programme

  1. the Board may require applicants admitted under paragraphs (b) and if necessary (c) to follow and pass supplementary study-units and/li>
  2. applicants in possession of a degree with Third Class Honours or Category III shall be required to complete a preparatory programme.

The Master's programme in Fine Arts is a course aimed to enrich a budding artist's relationship with creative practice and theory. It involves research, regular production of works and tasks, and critical analyses. The programme encourages diversity in thought, a studio-based artistic practice across main fine art media, and the exploration of new concepts. You will be allocated a working space that encourages creative flexibility. Your participation in group critique sessions, and in individual and collective tutorials is a fundamental part of the programme. If you have creative aspirations, and want to reach a level of artistic and self-confident maturity in your work, this programme is aimed for you.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the degree of Master of Arts - M.A. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Arts.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Produce innovative work that synthesises practical, theoretical, and critical knowledge
  • Achieve a professional understanding of contemporary art and design
  • Complete and resolve given tasks in the creative practice of fine arts
  • Obtain a significant academic and applied understanding of the field for further development of your artistic talents
  • Demonstrate technical and professional accomplishment in the completion of a final art project
  • Learn how to present your work in a diverse competitive field

The programme provides opportunities for you to:

  • complete, resolve and assert given tasks in creative practice in Fine Arts.
  • demonstrate reflective practice at Masterҳ level. It should confirm your ability to show the integral relationship between concept, process and realisations of works of art.
  • analyse the historical, theoretical, critical and analytical research conducted by the candidate and to show your inter-relationships in the production of works of art.
  • achieve an understanding of professional contemporary art and design.
  • critically reflect and analyse oneҳ work and discuss within a meaningful artistic context.
  • have sufficient academic and applied grounding for the further development of your artistic talents.
  • apply and articulate research methodologies in Art.
  • facilitate innovative work at Masters level which achieves the synthesis of practical, critical and theoretical concerns.
  • demonstrate technical and professional accomplishment in the rendering and dissemination of the Final Art Project and its presentation.
  • identify, explore, form an analytical awareness ample for an artistic experience.
  • apply and articulate research methodologies basing the final Art project.
