Information for International applicants

Applicants must be in possession of:

A Bachelor's degree with at least Second Class Honours or Category II in one of the human and/or social sciences, or an area of study deemed relevant by the Board, together with a minimum of one year’s experience working directly in a formal human or psycho-social setting.

All applicants shall be required to demonstrate that they have the necessary aptitude and disposition to follow the Course with profit.

Professional aptitude and disposition shall be measured by means of exercises involving an extended personal interview and personality test. Applicants who obtain less than 60% for the professional aptitude and the disposition criterion shall automatically not be admitted into the Course.

The maximum number of students shall be limited to 26 students.

When the number is so limited and the number of eligible applicants exceeds the number of places available, applicants shall be selected according to the following criteria, which shall be weighted as follows: :

  1. degree type and classification - 30%
  2. experience in areas related to counselling - 15%
  3. postgraduate qualifications in a relevant area - 5% and
  4. professional aptitude and disposition - 50%.

The interviewing board appointed by the Board shall be composed of at least three members.

For the purpose of selection, applicants whose qualifications as stipulated above were obtained by 31 August preceding the commencement of the Course shall be considered first.

On acceptance on the Course, applicants will be asked to submit an original Police Certificate of Conduct (not more than 6 months old) to the Faculty for Social Wellbeing.

Applications for our February and October intakes have been officially open since the third week in November. You can submit your application online. The Master in Counselling course provides you with an in-depth knowledge base and practice skills in professional counselling. This programme achieves this through the encouragement of scholarship in counselling, professional skills training and attention to the recognition of the counsellor as person. The programme is intended if you desire to develop knowledge, skills and competencies for professional practice in counselling. Graduates will be able to use the skills to competently serve individuals, couples, families, and groups in the community. This programme also promotes the professional status, identity and visibility of counsellors within different cultural contexts and seeks to extend students' abilities to consider counselling within the broader social context as well as within individual client work.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the degree of Master in Counselling - M.Couns. - under the auspices of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing.
