Applicants must be in possession of:

Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications

  1. any first cycle degree from the University of Malta or another higher education institution recognised by Senate, obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) or Category II or equivalent
  2. have a good spoken and written command of the English language (IELTS 6.5 level or higher) and
  3. have a high level of proficiency in oneҳ own native language (at C2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Applications for our February and October intakes have been officially open since the third week in November. You can submit your application online. The deadlines for submission of applications vary according to the intake and courses. We encourage all international applicants to submit their applications as soon as possible. This is especially important if you require a visa to travel and eventually stay in Malta.

The Master in Interpreting Studies is a taught programme that aims to help you develop your conference, liaison, consecutive and simultaneous interpreting skills and to successfully identify different registers in various languages. The first language (A language) in this programme is Maltese. The second language is English (B language). Additional passive languages (C languages) can be added, subject to a minimum number of students. The M.A. allows you to write a dissertation on a topic that piques your interest in a very rich and fulfilling field.

In addition to the compulsory study-units, students are required to choose study-units to the value of 6 ECTS credits from the elective study-units on offer during the year.

In addition to the prescribed 90 ECTS credits for the course, students may apply to the Board to register for extra study-units. Please refer to the note at the end of the programme.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Degree of Master in Translation and Terminology Studies - M. Trans. - or the Degree of Master in Interpreting Studies - M. Interp. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Arts.

In addition to the total number of credits for the programme (90 ECTS credits), students may apply to the Board to register for the extra study-unit listed hereunder. Extra study-units cannot substitute compulsory, elective or optional study-units that form part of the official Senate-approved programme of studies, and do not count towards the Year Average Mark or towards the Final Weighted Average Mark. ELP1063 Professional Studies 2 ECTS

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Have the necessary skills to work as a professional interpreter, including the ability to deal with unexpected or stressful situations.
  • Be highly proficient in your working languages.
  • Be able to identify and operate in a variety of language styles and registers.
  • Be able to undertake research in interpreting and related subject areas.

As a graduate, you will be able to work as an interpreter using different modes, including consecutive and simultaneous interpreting. You may choose to enrol in a doctorate programme offered at the University of Malta, or at a foreign university abroad, if you would like to enter an academic career of teaching and research.
