Applications for our February and October intakes have been officially open since the third week in November. You can submit your application online. The deadlines for submission of applications vary according to the intake and courses. We encourage all international applicants to submit their applications as soon as possible. This is especially important if you require a visa to travel and eventually stay in Malta.

You can compare your national qualifications to the local requirements by visiting our qualifications comparability webpage. Access more information about our admission process and English language requirements.

The University of Malta has student accommodation on campus called Campus Hub. Campus Hub is just a 2-minute walk from the main campus. For more information, visit the accommodation website.

Our dedicated team at the student recruitment office is here to support you every step of the way. From the moment you start your application to the moment when you receive your decision letter, we're here to assist you. If you have any questions or need further information, don't hesitate to reach out to us. You can contact us at info@um.edu.mt, and our team will be more than happy to help.

After you receive an offer from us, our International Office will assist you with visas, accommodation and other related issues.

The M.Sc. in Building Services Engineering is a postgraduate taught programme aimed at developing a specialised skill set that enables you to innovate and develop sustainable techniques to transmit back to the building industry.

Standards review and application, underpinning science, research and practical group work projects permeate through the programme required to develop such a skill set.

The delivery of this programme is varied, ranging from practical sessions to guest lectures by experts in their field asked to relate their technical expertise and experience to the upcoming generation of building services engineers. The programme culminates with a final year project brief that enables you to utilise the skill set acquired through the taught and practical sessions for a specific application.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Science in Building Services Engineering - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Engineering.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of active electro-mechanical systems that aid the operation and use of buildings.
  • Identify and integrate key and basic thermofluidic and electrical processes associated with building services systems.
  • Outline the basics of fire dynamics.
  • Interpret psychometric charts.
  • Calculate the energy performance of residential and non-residential buildings.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of how to manage a building services project.

  • Explain the various methods and criteria associated with fire safety by classifying the fire risk associated with a building.
  • Justify the choice of specific HVAC systems provided that the building requirements, operation, use and status are well understood.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and justify the notion of "connected buildings" and "internet of things".
  • Formulate adequate public health engineering services by identifying waste water requirements of buildings and associated services.
  • Assess and quantify the operational requirement of an HVAC system through the use of psychometric charts.
  • Compile a risk assessment using established and standardised methods.
  • Choose and specify fire mitigation and suppression requirements.
  • Identify health and safety issues during the design and execution of a building services project.
  • Identify sustainable means and methods of improving buildings through mechanical and electrical engineering systems.
  • Assemble various fire safety mitigation measures.
  • Integrate building engineering systems with existing or proposed buildings from an early design stage.
  • Comply with the Chartered Institute of Building Service Engineers standards.
  • Synthesise and adhere to legal requirements concerning planning laws and health and safety issues to design and execute building services projects.
