Applicants must be in possession of:

  1. a Bachelor's degree obtained with at least Second Class Honours in an area of study deemed suitable by the Board or
  2. a degree from this or another university which the Board considers as comparable to the degree indicated in paragraph (a).

Applicants may be required to provide evidence of being in possession of the licence to practice in the register of the profession concerned, as kept by the relevant regulatory council.

Applicants may be required to provide evidence of work experience following registration with the relevant regulatory council in the proposed area of study or area of specialisation, if applicable. The minimum number of years of experience required shall be indicated at the time of the call for applications.

The maximum number of students that can be admitted into the course is 20 students./p>

During the first year of the Course, accepted applicants may be required to undergo an occupational health assessment so as to ascertain that they are fit for the duties related to their proposed studies. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. Failure to disclose information about a physical or mental health problem that could affect patient safety is considered to be a serious breach of the University Suitability to Practise Regulations.

The part-time M.Sc. in Mental Health Nursing programme consists of a total of 90 ECTS at Level 5 (Masters' Degree) conducted over three years. If you are a psychiatric/general nurse or midwife seeking to enhance your mental health knowledge, then this course is targeted for you.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Science - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

By the end of the programme you will be able to:

  • Apply evidence obtained from research to answer clinical questions and in the formulation and development of potential interventions for selected patient populations
  • Transfer skills learnt (e.g. care plans) to a variety of clinical setting
  • Evaluate contemporary issues in mental and general health care in order to enhance both professional and clinical development
  • Act as a team leader
  • Introduce change in clinical and educational practices
  • Work as a member of a multidisciplinary team in the planning, development and delivery of mental health care programmes.

The programme enables you to master research, educational and professional mental health skills in order to contribute to enhancing clinical practice and service delivery. As a graduate, you may be in a position to take up clinical leadership and/or management and education posts. Mental Health services are expanding all the time in recognition of the huge impact mental health and illness has on society. As a masters' level mental health nurse, you will be able to take a lead in many of these initiatives. Additionally, they may also take up opportunities for further academic and self-development in foreign countries. You will be eligible to undertake the third cycle programme for the fulfilment of Doctorate studies.
