Applications for our February and October intakes have been officially open since the third week in November. You can submit your application online. The deadlines for submission of applications vary according to the intake and courses. We encourage all international applicants to submit their applications as soon as possible. This is especially important if you require a visa to travel and eventually stay in Malta.

You can compare your national qualifications to the local requirements by visiting our qualifications comparability webpage. Access more information about our admission process and English language requirements.

The University of Malta has student accommodation on campus called Campus Hub. Campus Hub is just a 2-minute walk from the main campus. For more information, visit the accommodation website.

Our dedicated team at the student recruitment office is here to support you every step of the way. From the moment you start your application to the moment when you receive your decision letter, we're here to assist you. If you have any questions or need further information, don't hesitate to reach out to us. You can contact us at info@um.edu.mt, and our team will be more than happy to help.

After you receive an offer from us, our International Office will assist you with visas, accommodation and other related issues.

The ever-developing professions of the Perit and the Engineer, have evolved in tandem with today's latest technological developments in buildings and services, towards a better quality of life. The now established reality of global warming has promoted a greater awareness of energy-conscious design as well as a cost-sensitive approach to buildings and their facility management.

Today, a number of professionals in the building industry have resonated the need to develop further their career into disciplines related to sustainable building design, with a focus on energy efficiency of buildings, resource management and overall enhanced performance.

It is in this context that the need was felt for a new programme of studies in line with global trends, to provide a more specialised profession, focusing on the various disciplines in architecture and engineering and their allied fields of specialization in environmental design, high-tech building services and overall enhanced performance of buildings.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Degree of Master of Science in Sustainable Building Design - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Faculty for the Built Environment.

By the end of the programme, you will be able to:

  • Promote a greater awareness of the impact of the built environment and associated resources issues in the context of mitigating global warming;
  • Orientate building design strategies towards a greater energy consciousness, thus resulting in the reduction of carbon emissions and other greenhouse gases;
  • Maintain the right balance between energy conservation, air quality, health, well-being and comfort standards within buildings, for a well-balanced and sustainable quality of life.
  • Develop and introduce novel concepts of energy management and resource efficiency (including materials).
  • Increase awareness and importance of retrofitting and re-use of buildings, in both their historic and modern context.

  • Contribute in a 'design-charette' (team) thus enhancing the overall quality of the design project;
  • Discuss and impart knowledge on the respective fields of expertise;
  • Quantify, audit and report the overall performance of a building through its multi-faceted sustainable design aspects;
  • Impartially evaluate an executed project, based on scientific evidence and a rigorous assessment, through acquired knowledge and understanding of the subject area.

Non EU Applicants:

Total Tuition Fees: Eur 13,400
Yr 1: Eur 6,700 - Yr 2: Eur 6,700

You are viewing the fees for non EU nationals. Switch to EU nationals if you are a national of any country from within the EU/EEA.

As a graduate of this Masters, you will eventually have a more diversified portfolio and experience in the more specific international job market in the field of sustainable design of buildings.

Software modelling and design tools are today considered an integral part of these professions. This is today considered a niche market, which deploys a variety of allied fields in itself, applied in retrofitting and design of new buildings, towards NZEB (Near Zero Energy Buildings) and enhanced performance standards.
